I'm just curious when other children will enter Kindergarten across the country. I knwo diff states and cities have different cut offs. Do you think one age is better over another for kids to enter into K? Thanks. |

In MA, the cutoff date is September 1st and kids must be 5 years old. There are many parents that hold their child back another year if they are born during the summer months. Every state has a different cutoff date though..I know CT is December 1st. |

Hello... here in CA a child must turn 5 before December 1st in order to start kinder. When my son started kinder a few years back, he was 4 years old. I should of never started him at that age, I should have waited a year. He was not socially ready. When my daughter started kinder, she had just turned 5 and she was really ready to start! Seems like girls and boys are different and I have always heard that boys should start later if possibly... but every boy is different! |

My daughter is 4 and just started kindergarten. She will be 5 in October. I think now that we have choices of half day or full day that 4 is a fine age to begin. Honestly I don't know that she would have been ready for a full day yet. But she has been in pre school and really was ready for new challenges so I am glad she was able to begin. But as she is closer to 5 then 4 I don't know that we are the norm. |

My oldest daughter just made the cutoff of dec.1st for kindergarten last year and she was so ready. now at 5, she is doing great in 1st grade and holding her back would have been a big mistake. her sister began preschool this year at 2yr 10 months and again she loves it and seems more than ready. I was worried about her really being ready, but you need to take a critical look at your child and seperate your fears from your child's capibilities. My daughter's preschool teacher says that it is much easier for others to let your child be independent than it is for us parents. if you are really worried, ask your child's preschool teacher, doctor or most schools do a kindergaten readiness screening. Boys and girls are different, but it depends more on a child's personalitly and development than their gender. my youngest is a boy, and i am sad that his birthday falls in the spring and he'll have to wait until 5 to go to kindergaten. i think he'll be ready well before, but i think it has less to do with age and more with the indivisuality of the child in question. I think they shouldn't have cutoff dates at all and should do it by evaluation. some kids are not ready for school until six, beleive it or not. i think a clinical evaluation and not age should determine a child's readiness for school. I'm sure tha this is much more than you were looking for as an answer, so hope it allieviates your anxieties if at all possiblie. |
