hello all, i have a 3,2 &1year old. i want to start preschool with them this fall...well,now...and i'd like to know where to go to find good resources for supplies, internet, routine ideas etc. they are after the cut off date so they will attend kindergarden at age 6. i'd like to keep them up to date and well educated by that time. we are working on days of the week..letter/word association, numbers and a good share of computer games. we try to have an outing everyday. i take them to disney once a week. after joining some of the groups in here we hope to find others that need outings too! the library seems to be too chaotic with all 3. the concept of an "inside voice" just doesn't seem to apply there.. any tips would be well received. chat soon! shannon |

Hello and welcome! I am a retired edcuator of 19 years. Since your children are so young, you can set up a schedule like this: Circle Time - this is where they sit and learn and sing educational songs. You can introduce the days of the week, show and tell, the weather, My name is----, I am 2,3, 4---- (Charts and materials should be eye level and this activity is a floor activity at their age) This tagets, language, cognition ( understanding of concepts) and socialization ( taking turns). This actitivity should be about 30 min.
Table top time: Here they can manipulate, puzzles, playdough, color, sting large beads, cuttung/pasting, building blocks. lacing. These activity will focus on their fine motor ( developing their finger, and eye hand coordination. This activity should last about 30 min.
Snack Time: Let them take turns setting the snack table, one can set the cups & napkins, one can put the cookies on the napkins, the oldest can pour the juice from a small container.Than they clean up. This targets scoialization, self help skills, language
Story Time: If you are using themes for this activity, choose a books that you will be able to not only read to them, but do several activities with them. This will target cognition, language and other areas depending on the activity. This actvity lasts about an hour
Play Time: Free Play, they can choose from one of the play areas you have set up for them or they can play together. This activity builds on socialization & language. This activity should last about 30 min.
Gross Motor Time - This target their big muscles. You can take them bike riding, park, may hop, skip, jump to favorite songs. This activity lasts about 30 mins.
Check for children's museum in your area and the zoo. These are nice trips and very educational. Check to see if their is a teacher store around where you can purchase the puzzles with large nobs, preschool beads, etc.
If you would like to look at my Usborne site for educational books and materials let me know. I am an edcuational consultant with them.
I hope this helps, Ruthy |

I used to be a preschool teacher and am now homeschooling my 6 yr. old and will probably do the same for my 2 yr. old. I have already started using the calendar to help with number recognition. There are also great magazines you can subscribe too as well, such as Early Childhood Today, The Mailbox. Scholastic has a great parent and teacher website. You can also sign up for free with The Knack Shack by Michael's crafts store, they have some great projects as well. There are lots of great websites for preschoolers, such as Kaboose. Just yahoo or google websites for preschoolers. Flannels are also fun to help with colors and stories. I set up a flannel board in the playroom for the girls to use, they love it.I hope this was some help to you. |

thank you everyone. the schedule sounds like something i can handle. now i need to make some purchases for the tools we'll need for crafts. i know thrift stores are great for chalk boards/ craft stuff, etc. plus walmart has supplies on sale for school also. i have bags of beans i'd like to put in jars for them to sort in ice cube trays...as long as the youngest doesn't try to eat them of course. i'm starting from scratch so we are devoting a small room in the house to do just this. school/ play. i'll start making my lists and putting this room together. next weekit should be ready to organize and paint a mural. thanks again everyone and i'll check in with you when i get the hot feeling and need some motivation! |

Since they are so young they really do learn a lot through play. I wouldn't make too much of a lot of sit down work but more play. It can be geared toward learning like singing and and other fun things to do. This way learning doesn't become something they don't like to do. :) Welcome to homeschooling at least for a while :) |

thanks! i know they are still a bit young but they are turning 4 & 3 in september. they learn together being so close and i have to gear activities for both of them to participate. they are almost like twins. the little one usually distroys whatever we are doing...the oldest is really good at puzzles, computer games, sorting, helping in the kitchen, etc and i feel like he is thirsty for more. he has speech therapy 1 day a week and really likes sitting down and learning. i just want to keep up with them as their needs/wants increase whether they know it or not. it's hard when you have all little ones when it comes to craft time...it starts out good..then erupts into a mess or a fight..probably like every kid...i hope.. |

Crafts can be hard for little ones. My boys are 21 months apart and they are really close too. Even taking your kids out for nature walks can be a learning experience. It's find to do some sit down work if that is what they enjoy. Just remember to keep learning a fun thing and not too restrictive. This way they learn to love learning :). Sounds like you are doing well. Do what works for you and your family. That is most important. |
