Hey, Everybody! When Is School Starting for You?
We are starting Monday, Aug 11th this year. In keeping with public school type education (because my daughter is going back to public school in a couple of years for high school) my daughter will have a full complement of classes each day. 11th grade Daniel will be working and dealing with two classes a day, 4 subjects at a time (like Algebra and Reading on M,W,F and Science and History on T & Th).

My oldest child, Josh (age 23) leaves for Kuwait between Aug 12th and Aug 15th. From there he will go to Iraq - please keep him in your prayers!

Are you doing anything different this year for homeschool?

My 6 yr. old starts K12 on Sept. 4th. We are really excited about homeschooling this year. I will keep your son in our prayers, Kelly.

We school year round but our next term starts September 21. We follow a quarterly schedule that turns with the solstices and equinoxes.

Hey Indigo! How does that year round thing work for you: how many terms per year, how long per term, what do you consider you school year (ours goes from August through July)?

We're still preschool level here, so our experience is limited, but so far, I'm doing four terms a year, starting around September 21 (autumn equinox) and have a Fall term, Winter term (beginning about December 21), Spring term (starts around March 20), and Summer term (starting around June 21). I find it works great for us since we are using kind of a loose nature-based curriculum, so changing terms at the seasons fits right in.

We start school August 18th for my oldest, Michael, who is homeschooled. My middle son, Jerrett, goes to public school and starts August 14th. My youngest, Isaac, we learn as we go, b/c he is still in the preschool stage. :-)

Cassandra brings up a good point about preschoolers learning as they go, basically all the time. But sometimes we forget that our older kids, and, in fact, ourselves, are learning everyday, all the time. We learn about responding to each other socially, about keeping our emotions on an even keel; we learn from watching Mythbusters or How It Works or any of 100 other shows out there; we learn from watching someone do something that we don't know how to do...
Learning is a life activity that we cannot avoid and that we must not forget about or discount its importance because it doesn't count for a grade.

I guess I should have called this thread, when is academic school starting because we are in Life School all the time!

We have been on and off all summer :P. But we are really starting today. In fact they are doing somethings while I am typing here LOL.

Very good point, Kelly Lee. ;My preschooler usually doesn't know he's even doing "school", but I mentally have a distinction so I get into the habit of keeping records in case it ever becomes necessary/useful once he (or siblings) are officially school aged.
