Not drinking formula
I was just wondering if when a child is teething could their appetite lessen? My 9 month old just got his 2 top teeth, he got his 2 bottom at 3 months, and with the top ones he seemed to kind of stop wanting his formula, but would eat all of his baby food and such. Now, kind of soon after just getting the 2 top ones he is already starting to get the next 2 top ones. I just switched him from Similac Sensitive to Similac Go and Grow, the next step formula, and he is only drinking about half and then refusing the rest, but still eating any food I give him, just as he did before. I don't know if it is the formula change, or if he is just starting to refuse, or if it could be teething and the first time he did this was just a coincidence. I really would like for him to stay with the Go and Grow to get his stomach used to milk, since he has been on the sensitive, but if he don't want it then I will have to switch back. He does not make a face at it or anything. He takes it fine untill he has had only half the bottle then is done with it. And the formula is to expensive to be messing around trying to see if it is the formula or not, so I thought maybe you guys could help me with some insite before changing again.

I would have said it was teething when I first started to read it. And then you switched his formula. Is he really fussy afterwards? He's stomach may not be able to handle similac go and grow. It could be a mixture of both. When my daughter would start and stop teething she wouldn't eat nothing for a while. Sometimes she would eat and get really fussy like the food was bothering her belly then she wouldn't eat a hole lot. I would call your doctor. He would probaly tell you to switch back to the other formula. I would switch back and just see if it was the formula. Good luck!

I'd say it has more to do with the formula change. Maybe you could try mixing the Go and Grow half and half with the other kind and see if he takes it better, then gradually move toward all Go and Grow.

Have you tried giving him the bottle before his solid food? Maybe if he is hungrier he will take more of it.

Maybe he just doesn't need as much. My son was down to about 16-20 oz of formula a day at 9 months. I would talk to his doctor and see whether he is getting enough with only taking half of his bottle, since he is eating solids well. Since it's so expensive you could make a smaller bottle so it doesn't go to waste, then make more if he wants it.

When my son was teething I had a hard time getting him to drink from a bottle he would only take 2 6oz bottles at night and then during the day I'd have to try sippy cup with water or watered down juice or a juice box [motts for tots is 50% water] My son liked/likes drinking from a straw, you can try that....

but also consult your dr.... I got worried that Sam wasn't drinking enough but my dr. said as long as he was having wet diapers during the day [4-5 pee pees at least][plus the night time super pee] then there was nothing to worry about....

in regards to the formula change is there diaherriea [spelling]? Is he more gassy?

Today he did a lot better. He is a little more gassy, but does not seem to bother him. He does not cry or complain and no diarrhea. I am starting to think it is just the teething, but will keep on eye on it. It does make me feel better that one child was only taking 16 to 20 oz. a day. I am stressing if he does not get close to 24 oz. So maybe I am just expecting him to drink to much. How much food was being feed with 16 to 20 oz. ? My son is eating 4 bottles with 7 oz. but sometimes not drinking all of it, with 6 -7 oz. of food 3 times a day, and usually a small snack time once a day. He is kind of big, but he is starting to catchup with his weight. He is 30 in. long but weighs 21 ld. and again he is 9 months. Does this amount of food sound good? He does go to the Dr. in a week and half, I could just see if they would move it up and talk to her then. Thanks for the help, you all have made me feel a little better.

16- 20 oz is actually what his doctor recommended. He was also big, so he had a healthy appetite. He ate cereal twice a day, fruit or veggie 3 times and some finger foods like Cheerios once in a while.

I would just call and speak to the doctor or a nurse and ask, just to put your mind at ease until his appointment. If he seems to have his usual amount of energy and is wetting and soiling the usual amount, he is getting enough.

Another thing you have to keep in mind is that babies and young children have sporadic appetites. To this day, there are days when my son hardly eats anything, and other days when he eats everything he can get his hands on. So maybe due to the teething or formula change he doesn't have as much of an appetite. Soon he will probably start eating a lot and won't be able to get enough. That usually means growth spurt. My son did that and literally grew out of his diapers over night, and it was somewhere between 9 and 10 months.

He has started taking the formula just fine and everything is good. But I really want to thank you for everything. You really made me feel better that I was not starving him, lol. But really I feel a lot better just knowing that he is eating pretty normal. He has not been in to the doctor since he was 6 months, at first you go so often it seems, then not for a while. Well, again, thanks a lot.
