feeding my five month old
Hello
I was just wondering how much you feed your 5 month old. She is taking the bottle and I have just started her on baby food, she has not had any trouble with the fruits and vegies I have given her so far except she did not like the peas. How many times a day do you spoon feed your babies? I just started mixing the fruits in with rice cereal and she likes that too. She is so cute when she eats and intently watches me eat when I am not feeding her that I did it twice so far today, gave her vegie this morning and just now mixed cereal and a fruit together and she is sleeping now. Any advice or other opinions from anyone....she also wakes up still during the night (sometimes once or others twice and eats a full bottle)

At this age, most of her calories and nutrition should still be coming from formula or breastmilk. I started my son on just a couple tablespoons of cereal and/or fruit or veggie once a day. Once he was doing well with that, I increased it to twice a day. I think by about 7 months he was getting solids 3 times a day, just a tablespoon or two at a time.

Take your cues from your baby. She will let you know when she wants more. Just be sure to increase gradually and continue to add new foods one at a time for a while to make sure she is tolerating everything well.

I would try the peas again in a few weeks, since sometimes it takes several tries of a new food for a baby to like it. Don't push the issue, just offer it and see how she does.

thank you. She still eats her formula in a bottle and when I mix the cereal with the veggies, I mix it with formula too. And she eats the whole container of the fruit at a feeding and will eat about 2 tablespoons of cereal and fruit at a time. How was your baby sleeping then? I will try the peas again after a while too

Hi Angie! I had the same questions when my son was that age...he's 8 months now and will eat everything...he still hates the peas. When I started him with a spoon I gave him the rice cereal with formula then the oatmeal and he did great so then I started him with the veggies and fruits and well now...anyways, Once he got use to the spoon I fed him baby food 3 times a day(pretty much when I ate). Most of the time I gave him a small 3oz bottle afterwards since the formula is better for them right now anyways...After a while he didnt' want the bottle anymore after eating so we traded to juice(most of it was water, like 1oz splashers to 3oz water). He is 8mo old now and is 28lbs(he's in the 97% weight and height) and he will eat anything you give him...He never really liked peas, greenbeans or squash but he'll eat atleast half.

You are welcome. He was sleeping through the night, sporadically during the day. He never really had a normal nap schedule until he was almost a year old. Now he does great, at 22 months, he naps once a day for about 1-2 hours.

I started my son on cereal at about 5m. His first food was sweet potatoes and he tore them up! Mushed peas were a total no go but he LOVES whole peas! I never really adhered to the tbls at a time - I fed him until he didn't want anymore, which was usually like 1/2 a jar mixed with cereal and breast milk/formula.
One thing that he really liked after mastering the pincher grip was/is noodles with sauce. I waited on tomato sauce till he was 1 as there is an allergy to it in our family, but I cooked up wheat free noodles and froze them individual portions in muffin tins. Pop them out and they keep in the freeze and thaw in perfectly in the microwave. Anyway, for sauce I would use the turkey/vegetable blend and like I said - he tore it up!

One note - I only introduced one food at a time - feed them the new food for 4 days before introducing another new food. That way if there is any allergy or intolerance, you will know what food caused it. I also avoided wheat and egg whites until he was one, just to reduce the risk of developing allergies.

Good luck and have fun!
PS - Pomagranant juice is halarious! Jake pulled the best faces, but kept coming back for more. Same thing with lime juice. :) he litlerally carried the little lime bottle around with him licking it.
