I was wondering if anyone else had lost a lot of weight after birth. I got up to 150 when I was pregnant with my daughter (now 10 months old) and am now only 99 lbs. I am breast-feeding and working out, but my normal weight is usually around 112. The doctor said it is just from the breastfeeding and being busy with the baby, but I still am worried a little bit. |

Hi Leah,
first of all, we are lucky to be losing weight so easily, most woman say they cant lose the baby weight. I gained 53 pds with my son and never thought I would lose it right away but in 3 months i only have 5 lbs to go back to my normal weight of 120. I cant understand how most woman cant lose the weight, I am exhausted and never have time to eat. Plus holding the baby and getting up all hours makes you burn calories constantly. I eat what I can when I can.
I think your Dr is right...breast feeding burns alot of calories and you have to eat more now then when you were pregnant. Just try to eat snacks through out the day to keep your calorie intake up. Protein bars help...they are a good snack and loaded with calories...
good luck... |

I also lost a lot of weight right after giving birth. I had no appetite and had to remind myself to eat because I was breastfeeding. I lost the weight and was back to prepregancy weight by about 6 weeks.
If you are worried you are losing too much, make sure you snack throughout the day. If you feel good, though, and are not feeling more tired than usual then it is probably nothing to worry about.

I also had concerns about weight loss. I gained 33 lbs during pregnancy and was down to just 8 lbs above my normal weight a couple weeks after birth. Those came off quickly and then I kept losing. I'm down 25 lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight. My dr. ran some blood work and everything came back fine. I too am breast feeding. My son is 9 months old. I haven't lost anymore weight the last 6 weeks and seem to be holding at where I am. Your body burns 500 calories a day breast feeding. I'm eating, but too have trouble with being so busy with the baby, that I no longer really sit down for meals. I try to keep snacks on hand that I can grab and go. I think I'm eating small snacks more regularly, which is recommended when you diet. I'm also drinking a ton of water, due to breast feeding. It may just be a combination of all of the above. Try to keep the intake of calories up and hopefully you will stabilize on your weight loss. Good luck. |

have you had your thyroid checked? A significant percentage of postpartum women have thyroid issues, myself included, and never ever get them resolved. Unexplained weight loss or gain...especially if it's sudden or drastic...is one of the many symptoms of thyroiditis. Just a thought...hope you don't wear yourself out. take care of that little girl's mommy, okay? |

I also have Post Partum thyroiditis. I lost a signifignat amount of weight after the birth of my daughter and thought it was from breast feeding. It wasn't until my annual Pap 6 months later that I mentioned my hair loss to my OB/GYN and he ran blood work. This condition affects 5-10% of women post partum. |

Leah, I haven't tried the protein bars, so I'll watch for others and try them as well. I have been keeping string cheese on hand. They are easy to grab and snack on. If you like cheese, you can get packages of them individually wrapped. I've been getting them at Costco and Sams Club. Also, I talked to friend who said she gained 10 lbs when she stopped breast feeding. She was thin as well and balanced out once she finished breast feeding at 1 yr. |
