Children with Downs Syndrome
Public online group

Hello,
Welcome A and Stephanie. Raising a child with Downs Syndrome sure can be challenging. Hope that you find networking with other parents helpful. My son Brendan is now 12 years old. He is a unique little guy, always happy and inquisitive. His favorite toy is a piece of clear plastic tubing that he likes to wiggle for hours and days. Mind you I have purchased him every toy that I think will help him to learn and develop but this has remained his favorite for quite some time. He began liking rubber/plastic snakes but I was concerned with him eating the heads of them with the lead paint scare from China toys so we found the clear tubing and it is non-toxic.

Brendan is non-verbal and not yet toilet trained. He is showing some emerging vocalization, however it remains to be limited to when he is highly motivated. For example: If he wants water he would sing to me water (really fast as if to be shouting in sign language) and then point and say "go". I came home te other day to hear him in his room repeating "help, help" it almost sounded like "out" but when I got there he wanted someone to change his movie. When he talks I usually react quickly and with praise so that hopefully he will realize that words can get him quicker action and attention. As for the other issue, toilet training, I hope that happens soon. It is very frustrating.

How old are your children and what challenges are you facing at this time?

Take care,
Connie
