2 mo old baby boy with HLHS
I have a 2 mo old baby boy with HLHS. He had norwood procedure when he was 2 wks old. After being home for 2 wks we had to spend another week in the hospital due to his wound getting mrca staff infection. He seems to be doing well now but still not taking a bottle well. Any suggestions about how long it took others to take a bottle or tips on how to get him to take a bottle would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Tammy

It has been so long since my son had a problem eating I will have to think about how long it took. I know he didn't take to my wifes natural ability to feed but he did better with a bottle. It took a couple of weeks for him to feed really well with a bottle. We have a website at www.kentuckianalefthearts.com If you need anything else please let me know. Our email is hlhsdad@kentuckianalefthearts.com

Hi Tammy. I haven't visited this site in a LONG time, but I'm glad I checked it today. My son is now 15 months old. He has Truncus Arteriosus, not HLHS but I joined this group for support and to share stories. So far he has had one surgery at 4 days old. He will need more, but we are just waiting and monitoring him. He's doing very well.

After my son was born, he was in the hospital for one month. When he came home he was on a feeding tube (ng tube). He never latched on so I ended up pumping for three months. He was on the ng tube for about 2 1/2 weeks before he learned to suck from a bottle and not get too tired out. At each feeding, I would start out trying to give him a bottle. Whatever he wouldn't take I put the rest in his feeding tube. I had to feed him every 3 hours and I can't remember how many ounces each time. I remember a nurse telling me to hold his jaw while I was feeding him and slightly squeeze his cheeks. I'm not sure if this really worked, but it might be worth a try.

Keep us posted.

We also had some feeding issues.  Logan def. would not latch on.. plus they wanted the amount he ate measured.. Now he is on special formula and we're going to be doing a swallow study because he keeps choking on his bottle.  Anyone else do a swallow study?
