I have been trying to start solids with my 5 1/2 month old son for about two weeks now. But all he doe is cry when i try to feed him. i have tried numerous ways to get him to understand that it is food. It is like he gets mad that i am not feeding him, all he wants to do is eat. But when i put the food in his mouth he looks at me like "now what?" I have even tried feeding him when he is not really showing signs of hunger. I am just wodering how long it takes for them to catch on. |

How long have you been trying this? It may take a couple of weeks before he really gets the hang of it, try and feed him a little earlier than you normally would so he is not feeling hunger pains. I first started my son around 4 mos, and more of it went on him then in his mouth. They don't just know how to do it, all they have done by this point is drink a bottle, it takes a little time he will get it, it may be to that he doesnt like the taste start him off with a fruit like the blueberry and apple I think it was, but I would offer a vegtable at the same time and alternate, you don't want him to get a sweet tooth. My son really liked sweet pot and apples and chicken. |

I dont know what happened I lost my response, so here it goes again. It may take a couple of weeks, he has never done anything but have a bottle or the breast by this point, my son started eating solids at 4 mos and more went on him then in his mouth, try feeding him a little earlier than normal so he isn't feeling hunger pains, Try a fruit first, but I would alternate a fruit and a then veggie so he doesn't get a sweet tooth. He will get it, I think I started out giving my son solids at breakfast and dinner and then as he got the hang of it I gave went to solids 3 times a day. You might try those teething biscuits to so he gets used to having something to chew on. They just disolve in their mouths. Good Luck |

I don't mean to sound like a fool, nor do I mean to make it sould like you are one, but one thing I found with my son, who is 9 months, is make sure the food is not to hot or to cold. I found that my son likes things heated, but still a little cooler then you would think. If it is to warm or a little to hot he will cry. Also try holding the spoon just in the tip of his mouth and let the food just kind of run in his mouth and let him kind of drink it off the spoon. This is how I started my son. |

maybe your son just isn't ready yet... You can always wait a few more weeks then try again... My son hated babyfood but he'd eat gerber puffs which I broke into smaller pieces.. They melt on the tongue...remember solids are not his main source of nutrtion yet... The bottle or breast still are. Good luck |

your son just may not be ready for solids and that's okay. my son wasn't eating solids on a 3 time a day basis until he was 7 months or so because he didn't see it as a source of food yet and he just spit it out. when he finally realized it filled him up he couldn't get enough! also i never tried to feed him when he was really hungry, usually an hour after a bottle so he was hungry enough to slowly learn it did fill him up, but not too hungry to make him only want a bottle since that was what he knew. now my son is 14 months and i am having a hard time with table food he doesn't like to chew, but i guess we all have our problems! good luck. |
