Self Feeding
I have a eight month old girl and I am trying teach her to use a spoon. If any of you have any hints to help me out that would be great.

Don't be afraid to let her get messy! I started off just giving my girl a spoon to play with after dinner. Then I started giving to her toward the end of the meal and slowly more time from there. I found if I gave it to her at the beginning she would spend more time playing with it than eating.

I woudn't worry so much about her using a spoon yet, from everything I have read they have the ability to grasp things between their 2 fingers starting around 7 months, like finger foods. I have not read anything that said they should be starting with a spoon this early. I am a early childhood educator and from eveything I have been taught I think I will wait a little while before I expect my son to use a spoon and he is 10 months old. He feeds himself finger foods and the baby food, cereal, yogurt, etc. I feed him with a spoon. They will master this when they are ready.

Thanks for the advice. I think I going to try finger foods and just let her experiment with the spoon. At least when she is holding her own spoon she does not try to grab the spoon I am feeding her with.
