Painful acid reflux
My son is now 3 months old but he has had acid reflux since he was born. He was on zantac for almost two months, but it stopped working. Now he's on prevacid. I have tried everything there is to help with his reflux. I maintain him elevated all the time, burp him often, feed him often w/ less amount, added cereal to his formula, and give him his medications. However, he just seems to be getting worse the last couple days. Yesterday he only ate 12oz for the whole day. He would only eat 1/2-1 oz at a time. He normally eats 4-6 oz per feeding. He is hungry but when we try to feed him he arches his back and cries. It's just been really hard to see him that way. His doctor scheduled an upper GI test for him to see if there is any anatomical problems. However, the test is not until May 30th and I don't know what else to do until them. I think even his doctor doesn't know what else to do. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Raymond had reflux problems as an infant but never enough that he needed medication. He threw up a lot and it didn't get better until 7 months old. You are doing everything that my doctor also told me to do. I know it's heart renching to see your baby in pain. Have a tried a different bottle? or nipple? Just a suggestion. Hang in there..Monique

My daughter is 10 months and was diagnosed with reflux right after birth also. We also had her on Zantac until it didn't work anymore and then she was put on Axid twice a day. We have done all the same things, keeping upright, cereal in the bottle. Hers has seemed to improve as she has grown and also since she has started more solid foods. She has at times done the back arching thing but I would always call that her "growth spurt phase" because it would happen for a few days then she seemed to get over it and all of the sudden she had grown some. Maybe the medicine isn't the right one for him. When my daughter was on Zantac we had to increase the doseage usually every couple weeks with her weight gain but since on the Axid we haven't had to adjust her dose once.
I understand your frustration and I hope things get better soon.

My son is 3 1/2 months old and has reflux. It started as a mild case, just spitting up frequently. Then the projectile vomiting, arching of the back and not wanting to finish his feeding started. His doctor put him on Zantac. it seemed to be better for a couple weeks. Now he's started to get a little more uncomfortable during feedings and spits up more, even 2-3 hours after he eats and has been elevated! I think he may need his dose of Zantac increased!
A friend of mine had the same problem with Zantac as you did. She had to try Prevacid and adding cereal to thicken the formula.
I feel for you because I know what it's like to try to feed your hungry baby and he won't eat, all he'll do is cry!

My daughter has mild reflux too. She is 3 1/3 months now. Our doctor suggested the same things you are doing although Ally never needed medication. She also suggested looking into an Amby baby hammock. http://www.ambybaby.com/ This obviously won't help solve the problem, but she said that they do help the baby rest and relax. We never bought one, but they seemed to have gotten awesome reviews. Good luck to you and hopefully everything turns out okay!

My daughter had terrible reflux as an infant. When she got to the age where she could sit up, she was fine.

Hopefully, the dr. will either find something that can be fixed, or this will resolve on it's own shortly.

Thank you for all your response girls. We did try several different bottles. I think I have over two dozen bottles. Dr. Brown seems to work the best for him. We also had increased his zantac dose and he was at the maximum dose for his weight. That's why the dr decided to change to prevacid. After calling the dr's office several times yesterday, I was able to get them to see him. His dr doesn't work on Fridays but one of the other pediatricians saw him. He examined him and said that he probably has a viral infection, the flu maybe. This explains why he doesn't want to eat. He said acid reflux usually doesn't get worse that quickly. So the infection combined with his acid reflux made feeding him a lot harder. He did however eat much better yesterday and today he's doing better as well. I do hope the GI test will help figure out what's going on. I'm just glad he's eating again. Thank you all for your support.
