My son douglas got a transformer car in his happy meal last night. Today i let him take the toy in the car on the way to school, but wouldn't let him take it inside. so he cried- and protested best he could that he didn't want to go to school. this was the first time he has ever been upset about going to school. i talked to the teacher after class and she said it took them a long time to have douglas get a hold of himself and control his emotions. but then he was a good boy. and since this car has had a grip on his emotions- having the car means happiness- and w/o is utter depression. my lesson so far is to not let him take toys (like that) on trips when he has to leave them behind in the car. is it just the newness? but what should i do when a toy has that much control over him--- currently i have hid it bc of his rotten attitude. but i want him to have toys he likes!!..but maybe not toys he likkes this much? what do you think? |

Hi Emily, Cool, the happy meal toy now is a transformer car…we are gonna have to get one (when we have a week straight where Arden can play with it until he gets bored with it!) I feel so bad for the situation, but can totally relate! Arden gets the same way with a new car. I try to just tell Arden the toy will be at the house when he gets back, or depending on the situation let him take the toy with him-when it isn’t going to be a problem. Distraction is one of my favorite tricks “Oops, we forgot the toy at home, lets sing itsy bitsy spider on our way” or something like that. A lot of times it works, but we still have our fair share of just plain old meltdowns over something silly (to me, but the end of the world to him) so I just have to let him cry for a while, then go with the hugs. Ahhh, parenting is hard!
