Regularity of a Breast-Fed baby...
I remember when I came home from the hospital the nurses gave me a chart that said how long she was supposed to have that tar-like deposit...but now, she's almost 4 months old and she isn't regular; or maybe she is and I just don't know what is. She goes every other day...should she go more? Sometimes she gets really upset, like it hurts, but then it ends up being nothing more than gas...?! What can I do to help this matter?!

hough my son is very regular (2-3 times day) my sisters son is not and only goes every 2-3 days and the doctor says it is normal. I would say unless it is hurting her other than gas or longer than 2-3 days to ask your doctor

i'm confused on what you mean by the tar-like deposit. she should have had that only the first couple days after birth. after that, her poop should be very mushy, yellow and seedy looking. around 4 months, i dont' remember what it looks like, but it should still be very mushy (regardless how many time she goes and even after she starts on iron cereal). so, if it's not that consistency, she could be constipated and i would definately have her seen by her ped. if it is mushy, then i wouldn't worry about frequency (as long as she has enough wet diapers each day (which i think is 6-8 minimum). hope this helps

Thank you both...when I referred to the tar like I meant that the nurses told me what to expect then; but no on told me what to expect now...I figured she might be just fine and she does have plenty of wet diapers...Thanks alot ladies; I feel alot more at ease!

Have a great day!

According to what my dr. told me, in a breastfed baby, regular can be 7 dirty diapers in one day, or one dirty diaper in 7 days(or anything inbetween). For a formula fed baby, they should have a dirty diaper every day. I think it has something to do with the way their body digest the different milks. Also, for a baby who is breastfed, it should be mushy, yellowish(almost mustardy), seedy, runny, more sweet-smelling rather than stinky, ect. For formula fed, it should be brown, more solid, and smelly. It should also change to the more brown, solid, smelly, ect when they start solids. In regards to the gas, I would recommend Mylecon drops(those are for gas) although you may want to check with your ped first. I gave them to my son and they worked wonderful for him. Hope the info helps.
