Welcome to Parents of preschool and school-aged preemies!
I am the mom of a 4 year old son who was born at only 24 weeks. I went though many years of infertility and many miscarriages before becoming pregnant with my son. At 22 weeks I experienced PROM (premature rupture of membranes) and was put on bed rest in the hospital. While there, I was constantly monitored, given antibiotics and eventually given steroids. My son was born at a little over a pound and a half and was nearly 12 inches long. He spent 102 days in the NICU and came home on an apnea monitor (until 9 months old). We were lucky. He did mostly everything in the average time frame (adjusted age), and has no serious lasting effects of his prematurity.
He was recently diagnosed with asthma. The pulmonologist said that it may be caused in part because his airway has some built up scar tissue from the vent, but it could be just him too. So far it is minor and he needs the inhaler only before being really active, like going to swim class or before a visit to the park with Friends.
I do worry about his behavior. While he can focus on things he is very interested in, he sometimes can be more aggressive than I would like, and sometimes has a hard time listening in general. I doubt that this is related to his prematurity, as there are other times that he is a great listener and "perfect" for lack of a better word. I am thinking we may need to fine tune discipline a bit more, but it is difficult to find something that really works, at least long term. In any case, we are aware of him, his behaviors, and issues that may arise in the future.
All in all, he is a great kid and we are so lucky that he is here, happy, and healthy!!
Hope you will pull up a chair and join in on some conversation. Can't wait to get to know you! |
