Hi, I was hoping someone could help me with this situation. I can't call my son's pediatrician because it is a holiday.
Any way, yesterday my son (13 months old) seemed fine all day. Then when I was giving him his nightime bath, I thought his breathing sounded a little conjested. After his bath, I wrapped him in a towel, and gave him to my husband for a minute, and usually my son would never sit still for this. He would want down so he could play. He didn't do this, and stayed in my husband's lap for at least 15 min. I thought this was strange, so I took his temp, and it was 100.8. We gave his some Infant Tylenol, and put him to bed. By this time, he was sneezing and coughing a little, and his nose was snotty. He didn't sleep well, and woke up every few hours. Now this morning, his temp is 100.4, he's occasionally coughing and sneezing, and his nose and chest sound congested. He is still walking around, and playing some. He doesn't seem to be acting like he feels bad.
Now the ?'s: 1) What is considered a temp for his age? 2) Should I give him Tylenol when he has temp, if so, at what temp should I give it? ( I didn't know if it was good for him to have a low temp to help his body fight the infection.) 3) Is there anything else I should do for him right now (extra fluids, etc?)
Now I feel silly for asking this ?, but ... we had plans to go out of town to a 4th of July festival today, and I don't know if we should go. Any suggestions? I don't want to make him worse. I think it is supposed to be a nice and sunny day, so he will not get cold, but I don't know if it's best to keep him home when he has these symptoms.
I know this was a lot, and it's minor, so thank you in advance for any time and advice any of you can give me!!!
Happy 4th :) |

That is really considered a low grade temp according to everything I have been told. I would still do Tylenol every 4 hours or so to help him feel better. I think a cold just makes them feel cruddy more than anything. I am new at all of this too, my son is almost 10 months old but he has had many colds and ear infections since he started day care in December. He now has tubes in his ears because the last few ear infections just wouldn't clear up. I think colds just have to run their course and I would just try to make sure he is getting fluids to not get dehydrated. I guess that is your call about your trip for today, if he is still playing and walking around and not lying around all day I would probably still go. I guess I would watch him for the next few hours and see. This is just my advice, I am not in the medical field but my mom is a nurse. I have listened to her for years so maybe I have learned something. |

My boys had a bug last month. They both (not at the same time) had a fever. I took them both to the doctor(again, not at the same time) when their fever got to be 104. The doctor said it is a fever when the temp gets to 100.8. He told me to give Pedialyte, and when the temp get to 101 or higher to give Tylenol. Give a luke warm bath to help bring the fever down and let them rest as much as possible. If he or she gets a fever higher than a 105 call the peds number which will direct you to the answering service who will contact you to the hospital and they will tell you if you should bring them into the ER. Personaly I wouldn't bring my child out (even if I had plans) while he is sick, not only because I don't want him to get worse, but I don't want anyone else to get it either. If it is what my boys had then it can be passed around. |

I hope you had a good holiday even though your little one wasn't felling well. But I give my daughter baby tylonal with any fever and we don't leave the house unless there is no way around it. Give your little one lots of fluids (water/pedialite) so he doesn't get dehidrated. Hope he feels better soon. |
