feeding solids
Hi, I have a 5 month old little boy and we have just started giving him rice cereal. The Dr, said to give it to him twice a day for breakfast and dinner. So my question is when is the best time to feed it to him. We have pretty much been on the same feeding schedule since he was 3 weeks old and he seems to really be happy with that. I feed him at 8 am, 11am, 2 pm, 5 pm and 8pm. So should I give the cereal with a feeding or between a feeding? Like at 930 and at 630 or should it be with the 11 and 5????
We were doing 11 and 5 and have been giving him cereal for 10 days, he would open for the first few days and now he wants nothing to do with it. Please help thank you

Hi Nikki, I haven't started my almost 5 month old son on any solids yet, but I've read a lot about it. From what I have read, you should try some solids (like rice cereal or a mashed, ripe banana mixed with a little breast milk so that it is pretty thin) in the morning and it should be included with one of your normal breastfeedings. So say you decide to try it with the 11 am feeding, stop about half way through and try a little solids. You don't want to totally replace one of the feedings with solids because your son could become frustrated by trying to eat solid foods if he is really hungry. You essentially start weaning your child once you start solids. Of course, that doesn't mean that you have to stop breastfeeding shortly after you start solids, but you are essentially replacing some of your nursing sessions or supplementing them with solid foods. You want to try it in the morning so that if he has any adverse reaction you will have all day to deal with it instead of throughout the night! Give each new food 3-4 days before you try anything else so that you can test for any food allergies. Don't mix any cereal in a bottle. That is a common piece of advise but everything I have read says that that is the wrong thing to do. It can lead to your baby taking in way too many calories. The only reason you are starting solids at this point is for developmental reasons, not really nutrition so putting cereal in the bottle totally defeats that purpose. Also, if your son doesn' t seem to like solids or is having a hard time actually eating off of a spoon, forget about it for right now and try again in a few weeks. 6 months is usually when they are able to handle the solids but all babies are different. Some start earlier, some later. If you're interested, check out the book Super Baby Food. It has a ton of info in it and lots of good ideas about making your own food and saving lots of $$. Good luck!

Hi, when I started feeding my daughter cereal, I only started with once a day. I did it in between feedings, so she wasn't starving and frustrated or too full and frustrated. It is a messy and time consuming process, so don't sweat it. If he doesn't seem interested today, try again tomorrow. You may also notice that your son is MORE interested at a certain time of the day.
Once my daughter seemed to be "getting it" I started with another meal. She is almost 7 months and still only 2 times a day of solids. The doctor said once she is eating a certain amount 2 times a day, then add a lunch.

Thank you all so much for the great advice I am so happy to say that we tried this morning mixing in a little applesauce that my Dr, recommended and we also tried it at 830 right when he wakes up instead of at 11 and he did great. I was so proud of him, the little things get us so excited. He opened right up and was ready for the next spoonful. So now we will try to get a time down around dinner time that he will be hungry enough to eat and will enjoy it much better. Thanks again for all your help. This first time mommy thing is hard as i am sure we all know.
