interducing solids and breastfeeding
Hi, I have a 5 month old little boy and we have just started giving him rice cereal. The Dr, said to give it to him twice a day for breakfast and dinner. So my question is when is the best time to feed it to him. We have pretty much been on the same feeding schedule since he was 3 weeks old and he seems to really be happy with that. I feed him at 8 am, 11am, 2 pm, 5 pm and 8pm. So should I give the cereal with a feeding or between a feeding? Like at 930 and at 630 or should it be with the 11 and 5???? Please help thank you

I think you should do the 11 and 5 cereal as one feeding, feed him how ever much dr says and then if he still seems hungry breast feed him as well. But I WOULDN'T ADD ANOTHER two meals in.

I have a 6 mo son and he is pretty close to your sons schedule. I have been doing ceral since 4 mo ad found that it works best with nursing and his nap schedule to do around 930 and 530 (give or take a half hour) I also found he sleep better is I give it to him half hour before his nap so maybe this will help you decide on a time. I started the morning one early because eventually you have to add a lunch which I just started this week and I am doing that around 100. If I were you based on your nursing schedule I would do 9am and 6pm but your son will honetstly tell you, maybe try both dor a couple days and see what wors best for you both.
Good luck!

We were told not to give it to him when he gets a normal feeding. When we started our son on rice cereal (careful, it binds and our son couldn't handle it at that age, we had to use oatmeal), we did it about an hour after his first morning bottle/breast and then about an hour or so before his dinner.

I was told to give milk first then food (cuz the nutrition is more from the milk and you don't want him to run out of space)..but that never worked out for my girl cuz she'd fill up on milk and wouldn't want to eat. So I did it the other way around because she wouldn't fill up on cereal alone. I think you still want to make sure that they are still getting a certain ounces of milk (I don't remember what it is at that age). Whenever you feed your boy depends best on your kid and your schedule. Breakfast and Dinnertime is fine..or Brunch and before bed...whatever works for your family. I know it takes adjustment because I was breastfeeding and I felt like my girl was fed all the time..if she wasn't drinking, she was eating..haha. I think pretty soon he'll be going onto 3 meals of Stage 1 baby food and you'll be feeding less breastmilk/formula so it'll get "easier" to figure out his feeding schedule.

Thank you all for all the great help that you have offered, we seem to have found something that works for us. i feed him at about 830 cereal and then offer him to nurse, then again we nurse at about 11 and for lunch i have him a veggie.at 1230 (and like someone had said it really feels like they are eating or drinking at all points in the day). than again at 2 i offer him to nurse, 5 he gets cereal and offer him to nurse. then once again at 8 before he goes to bed. So thats what seems to work for use, thanks again for all of your help. does anyone know anything about making your own baby food or any recipes i can do because i am sure everyone knows how much things cost these day. i hope every one has a great week.
