Hi, my son is 22 months old and I've found myself recently obsessed with toddler development to the point where I'm convincing myself at times that something is wrong. It's like I'm a hypocondriac (sp) but with him in mind. It's taking the fun out of parenting because I'll read something about autism for example, then find myself studying my son for any of the symptoms. I just unsubscribed from babycenter.com because I was making myself so nervous, and think that's a good step to just enjoying being Mama. Our son has had perfect check-ups up to now, and his next one's in 2 months. He's seems right on track, but these articles can be so damn scary!!! Anyway, just wanted to know if any of you have experienced this same kind of worry. Thanks :) |

I'm the same way, only my daughter is 5 months! So I'm paranoid thinking that if something like autism is an issue, I won't know for the longest time!
I read parenting magazine and I read about gastro something or other where the baby fusses when eating and all that. And she has these horrible red blotches on her face and tummy and arms and legs (in patches not allllll over.) The doctor is trying different formulas now and they seem to be working. That and she has eczema. Poor babe.
I mean, I love that magazine, but at least once during the time that I read it I end up worrying. I just tell myself that if there was something wrong I would know. I'm her mommy! Instincts are your best resources!!! |

Hi Lauren
My son is the same age as yours and I believe it is perfectly normal to want to be informed and to worry to an extent. Don't let is make you paranoid however remember on all of the information sites there is always the disclaimer in one way or another that "EACH CHILD DEVELOPS DIFFERENTLY".
PLay with your child, love your child, admire his accomplishments, laugh at his humor and don't sweat the things he may not have mastered as yet. At this age they are still absorbing the world like a sponge and even though they do not always fully show it they are learning and storing information, mannerisms at much more that they would one day just surprise you by using, saying or doing.
It is a scary world out there with the overabundance of information but the important thing is knowing your child as an individual.
Your child has had normal check ups, I'm willing to bet he is on track. Just let him know how much mommy and everyone loves and appreciates him not just as a baby but as a bonifide part of the family with his special likes, dislikes, quirks, habits and everything else.
GOOD LUCK! |

Afihtan - thanks so much for your reply (and everyone else's too!) Your second paragraph really hit home. It's been over a month since I wrote this post, and I'm feeling much better about things...really trying to just relax and enjoy my delicious little guy :) |

Me too, I thought I was the only one. I look at my angel and look for the silly things like that too and she is also almost 5 months old. She is very healthy and doing great, but I too suffer from over worrying |

I definitely know what you mean!! My son is only 16 months old and I'm so obsessed about autism, partly because I taught special education before I became a stay-at-home mom. I think I am constantly overanalyzing him. Sometimes I feel like I am pressuring him to learn things too early to assuade my own fears instead of letting him pick them up in his own time. I think these fears have always been around but the media is hyping them up more. Every time I turn on the TV there is something on about autism or problems with child development. All I can say that has helped me is to be VERY honest with your pediatrician about your worries and conerns and they will either put them to rest or give you even more reason to worry. I hope it is the first one for you!! |
