Okay everybody I am not sure what I am suppose to do. My daughter has been sick for about a month now, and has been to see the doctor three times. Twice to the urgent care clinic and twice to see her pediatrician. She has been running a fever on and off again, vomitting occasionally (progressed from vomitting flem to vomitting food), a flemmy cough, and can't sleep through the night. She will stay in her bed for about 4 hours before she wakes up crying and wanting me tot ake her out of bed. I can some times get her to go back to sleep, but only for about 20 minutes before she is up doing the same thing. She will then come out of her bed and sleep on her dora bed with me until morning. She is now on the third type of medicine the doctors have decided to give her. The first was amoxycilin, then bactrim (currently taking), and as of today they added zertek (allergy meds). I don't believe that allergies are causing her to be sick like this. The doctor said if she isn't better in two weeks to set up another appointment, I think I am not going to wait that long. I will give it a week, and then take her in. If they still can't find anything I am going to have to start demanding tests to be done. Tell me what you all think or if you have had similar situations. Thank you. |

DEMAND that tests be done to figure out what is going on. I am a physician and get sick to my stomach when other physicians hand out antibiotics without doing any testing to ensure the infection is bacterial. Your daughter may also have food allergies. There is a blood test for food allergies as well as tests for environmental allergies. Throwing meds at a child and hoping one sticks is BAD medicine in my opinion. What your daughter is going through doesn't sound right to me. You need an open-minded pediatrician that is willing to investigate every avenue before throwing more useless drugs into the situation. Just my opinion. |

Thank you Allison I truly appreciate your response. I made my husband go to the appointment with me today as I am starting to think my daughter's doctor is thinking I am crazy. It some times makes me think that I am an anal mother and should just believe the doctor's as I am not a physician. Thank you again. |

No problem. Since it sounds like you already had the appointment, how did things turn out? |

no I haven't gone to demand test yet. I am going to try and give her a couple of days since she just started both of the new medications this week and, if it doesn't start to weed itself out I am going to have to demand something. I just worry so much because she seems good natured and is acting fine it really affects her when she wakes up from sleep and obviously when she throws up, or starts running a fever. I will let you know. Thanks |

The reason I mentioned food allergies is because my best friend's son had some of the same symptoms as your daughter. He had a rattling cough, thick, green, ropy mucus streaming out of his nose, problems sleeping at night and a slight fever. He went through 3 courses of antibiotics and nothing seemed to help. I suggested she switch him from a milk based formula to either soy, or rice (or one of the non-allergenic kinds), and he cleared up immediately. I also suggested to her that she give her son probiotics (healthy bacteria that help build the immune system) because antibiotics kill all of the bacteria in the body. A lot of times a patient will get a secondary yeast infection (or some other kind of infection) after too many antibiotics because of a lowered immune system. Anyway, I hope your appointment today ends up a success. |

Listen to your gut! The doctors, no matter how caring they may be, do NOT have your child's best interest at heart. You do. No doctor should ever make you feel by their behavior or lack of behavior that you are "crazy" for coming in so much. Is your daughter old enough to communicate how she's feeling? Where it hurts? Poor thing. I hope she feels better soon, but that you also get some clear direct answers. |
