Hello! I am "mommy" to a wonderful baby boy. He is just perfect in every way... His only "thing" is that he simply doesn't talk...and no, I don't mean he says one or two words...nada...zip...no words at all... His Dr says it's not a "big deal" until he is 20 months; but let's face it...waiting around to see if he is going to speek in two months is; well... two whole months away... anyway...rant over! I am so glad that there is a group for this... |

Hi Cynthia!
I completely understand how you feel. While son was making noises at 18 months, he had no words and his doc kept saying he was fine... keep reading to him. I was so frustrated.
I don't know if you have checked with your state's early intervention resources or not. In PA, if there are no underlying circumstances (ie premie, physical conditions that would obviously affect speech development) they generally don't do any evaluations until the child reaches the age of two. Then again, it can't hurt to call them, just do an internet search on early intervention and you should be able to find contact info for your state's EI program.
The members of this group have presented plenty of resources that you might find useful in the meantime. Have you tried baby signs at all? I was really skeptical about them until my son's speech language pathologist encouraged me to use them with him. I thought it was kinda counterproductive to teach my son how to communicate without talking when I want him to talk, ya know? Anyway, I was surprised at how effective it was because he learned the joy in being ABLE to communicate his needs and it taught him that even though he could get BY without communicating, he was better off when he did.
I am sorry this was so long but, I am hoping that you make yourself at home here. We are a very welcoming and encouraging group and we all know what it's like to not know what to do.
Anyway, welcome to the group and please keep us updated!

Hello and yes I know how you feel, my son is 2yrs and 7months old and he says Mom,Dad,Up,In,and a couple others but that is it.He says his letters to alphabet good but does not talk? He is in speech therapy and goes to an early steps class to help him. It does seem to help. I hope I helped you feel better, good luck. Kim Tournois |
