Okay, I just need to vent for a minute. I told my supervisor and my manager not too long ago I'm pregnant. When I announced I was pregnant I had already called in sick just once. And that was because I was sick but on top of that I didn't have daycare ( I didn't tell them the main reason, that I had to stay home with my son in addition to being sick ) The second day I called in sick and let them know I was pregnant, I had just found out I was pregnant and had a stomach bug. Let's just say it was food poisoning ( I'm sure you know how that is ) and there was NO WAY I was coming in to work. I felt that I needed to prepare them just in case I had morning sickness, so I let them know I just found out I was pregnant. And here is some background, after the second time I called in sick my new supervisor had a meeting with us saying that if people were to call in Mondays ( trend ) Kristin the upper manager would be keeping track of it. I have a total of 6 occurrences for the year. So yesterday, I had morning sickness that day ( for the first time ), went into work sick with a bad cold or flu to avoid the Monday trend and heard all over the place " I don't want to get sick, I don't want to get sick " from people so I went home. In our meeting our supervisor said to keep in mind that not to worry, if Mondays were a trend, then that is when it would be an issue but if you are really sick you should stay home. I barely could make it through the day, anyway. So I asked to leave after trying to stick it out. I came home, felt really crappy, was running a high temp that I couldn't get down, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, congestion, all of it. Then I called in sick today. I told my supervisor I have been running a high temp that I haven't been able to get up and around. Also I would rather stay home and get better than go in and not be able to make it through the day and have another occurrence. Granted, over a short period of time all of this has happened but they need to keep in mind the fact that I have a kid and I just started him in daycare!! Of course, I'm going to get sick again, and being pregnant on top of it is just not easy. I know I'm not the first person to get pregnant at this job but everybody is different. Why can't I work in a place that is more family oriented! Why? Why aren't places more open to the fact that people have families and have other expectations and issues outside of work!? Why do I have to work with such cynical people? I know it's a place of business and they have to keep things running but I'm so sick of it! I am a full time employee, some temps have called in sick more than me! It is a job BENEFIT to have sick days, so am I going to lose my job because I'm pregnant? Anyway, what am I going to do? Some people are lucky enough not to get sick. Obviously, that isn't me. It is completely out of my control! Seriously, I feel totally harrassed right now. I have 3 more occurrences before anyone should even be giving me a verbal warning!! And then one more after that to get a written warning, or something to that effect. It is not like I'm taking advantage of being pregnant. People are so shitty, I don't know how I'm going to get through the next couple of years having kids and worrying about them being sick and losing my job. I don't even know if I want to stay here if they're going to treat me this way. Why does life have to be so stressful? Maybe I'm just being hormonal, you guys, sorry. I just feel horrible right now. Thanks for letting me vent.

Hey- YOU SHOULD BE COVERED BY FMLA
I know it is so stressful. I myself was going through the same thing when I was pregnant so just breathe and don't stress out the baby. The baby is the most important right now..I am not sure where you are located but..
There is this program called FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) which is the law, I am not sure what state you are in but it covers you for situations like this. It gives you up to 12 weeks up to (don't remember) 1000 or so hours. You should ask your HR department. You can work a reduced schedule if you like or you can take intermittent leave for doctor's appointments, being sick due to your pregnancy (must be pregnancy related). Although my company does not pay for it..You can use it for your maternity leave if you like but you can use hours from it throughout your pregnancy. By the way they cannot fire you, FMLA covers your job whilst you are pregnant and if your boss does not tell you about it and fires you, you can even sue. You can take the leave unpaid if you don't have sick or vacation hours or you can use them during that time if you do.
You can get more info from http://www.dol.gov/esa/whd/fmla/. Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

I called Medical Leave today, they tried to register me for it but since I have not worked at my job for a year I probably do not qualify. And on top of that, they will send a letter to my employer regardless of whether I get turned down. So now my employer is going to know I applied! I hope they don't think anything of it. The lady at Medical leave told me I would be eligible once 9-4, my one year anniversary for sure, but she didn't tell me if it was just for pregnancy reasons. I told her I was sick, period. Thanks for your help, though. I truly appreciate it. When I called I did find out I have some benefits for sick child, so that was good to know. I am hoping that is all I have to deal with this year. |
