Hi there, my 12 month old (as of today! Yay!) has taken to sqirming around when I try and change her diaper, or put on her clothes. She just started crawling around really fast a few weeks ago, and so, once I lay her down, she's off like a rocket! lol! Its funny but frustrating because I want to get her out of her dirty diaper and into a clean one, but she freaks out when I try and stop her, or thinks its really funny. I have heard this is normal, but does it stop or is there some way to make it go faster? I am pretty quick at changing diapers, but she's possibly quicker than me in escaping! I try and distract her with things to hold but she's on to me now, and is done with that game. Any suggestions?

From the time my son was a month old it was like WWF trying to get his diaper and clothes on. Then he hit the stage you are talking about and it was nearly impossible- the wiggle away so fast! My husband and I would gently put our leg over his tummy to keep him in place. We were very gentle and only used enough force to keep him from squirming away. He hated it but it made changing time go so much faster. They just want to be doing something else now that they can toddle around and explore the world. Mine outgrew it at about 18 months. He is almost 2 and now brings me his diaper and lies down to be changed! There is hope! Best wishes! |

The thing that usually works for me is giving my daughter my cell phone (speaker on so she can hear the buttons beep and looked so she can't call out). The other thing I did for awhile is talk to her and tell her your almost done but if she doesn't let put the diaper on let her go for a couple of min. with out one on and air out her little bottom. She will settle down a little bit when crawling isn't new until she starts walking on her own and can jump up and go but that didn't last as long for us my daughter now doesn't like to sit or anything with a poopy diaper and lets us change it. I hope it doesn't last long for you. |

Hee! Hee! That's so funny! And she obviously thinks so too, huh? Well, I'd be really clear to her by your tone of voice and face when you want her to stay still. It's a teaching moment...but I'd still just take a deep breath or two and chalk it up to another one of those baby-time things. I would say however that your little girl is old enough to understand obedience and if you want her to stay still, then you can and should help her to know by telling her to "stay still so mom can change your diaper..." over and over and over again if necessary. Good luck! |

My son does a lot of that. What usually works is singing songs or distracting with a toy. Sometimes I just sing whatever comes to mind, just so he can hear my voice. I sing softly, so he has to pay attention to hear it.
It may calm down after a while, or when she gets to the point of feeling uncomfortable in a dirty diaper. Then she may just be glad to be changed and feeling fresh. My son is 20 months and still does it,but often it is because I have to interrupt his play to change him. At those times bringing a toy to the changing table and going very fast help. |

My daughter is like that. My husband made up a diaper changing song that we sing to her. We also give her something to play with while we change and dress her. We have begun asking her to hold things so she "helps" mommy or daddy. GOOD LUCK!! |

Thanks everyone! Since the toys or objects don't seem to work at the changing moment, I may try the light leg trick on the floor with her for awhile (since I don't think I could keep my leg up that high long enough for a change! hee hee!) and also try singing to her softly. She loves when I sing, which I can't understand since my voice is poo, but whatever works! lol! I will give these things a shot! Thank you! Aren't kids a hoot? Hugs, Kaulana :>) |
