New to all of this, so where do I start?!?
Hi everyone!
I'm new to Raising Them and new to the idea of homeschooling. I'm looking into homeschooling my 4yr son and I'm not sure where to get started. Currently I find things a bit overwhelming and I’m not sure how to find out if this is right for my child/family so please offer suggestions on where to begin…advice…resources…etc.

I always mention the A to Z Home's Cool website. Ann Zeise, the owner, has collected and maintains a large amount of information on homeschooling various ages, using various philophies, where to find additional resources, along with bunches of articles and how-tos. The URL is http:/homeschooling.gomilpitas.com.

I'm sure someone who has homeschooled a younger child will reply. My experience is with pre-teens and older.

Kelly gave you some great sites to start with. I do want to ask you if you know the law for your state to homeschool yet? If not I can give you a site to help you do that. Most importantly I would say take a deep breath and relax. :D I know how nerve wracking it can be when you are first starting out but each year gets easier. You are doing it at a great age too because this way you will really get to know your son and how he learns. Welcome to the group! :)

What state are you in? HSLDA has a section where you can look up your state laws for homeschooling. That's what I'd startwith.

I homeschool my almost 7 y.o. and will be teaching my almost 5 year old this fall. All I can tell you is what i did with my oldest and what I plan to do with my baby.

We're using Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons for reading and some grammer. I also took my spelling words from those lessons after he started reading. I tried several Math curriculums with the oldest but ended up with ACE (school of tomorrow). I was a EC-4th teacher before I homeschooled so I had tons of stuff already and kinda pieced it together to round everything out.

This year for the baby I'm using Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, Saxon Math K, and Five in a Row to round it all out. He needs lots of hands on from me.

For the oldest, who is a VERY independent learner, we're going to all ACE-School of Tomorrow. It's self paced. They also have a Kinder program that is more hands on as well but it's pricey and I didn't want to spend that kind of $$$ when I don't need to for the youngest.

Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to try to answer them.
