wierd breath
Okay, People...

This is a really hard message to post. My sixteen month old daughter suddenly, in the last few weeks, has really bad breath. I don't know what to do or what I am doing wrong. Her diet is damn near pristine. She is a vegetarian, drinks only soymilk and has no preservatives or refined sugar in her diet. Yet, and I am only partially kidding when I say, her breath smells like a cross between rubbing alcohol and crap!! (Okay, not crap, but at the very least garlic...) But seriously...I don't get it. And I am scared. Everything I have learned at the "University of Google" indicates that bad breath in babies, if your not doing the normal hygeine things, which I am, is bad. Infection...virus. Help. I have meticulous teeth brushing routines. I have a pediatrition appointment this week, but was wondering if any Mom's had any insight...

Only advise I can think of is brush her tongue and keep a food journal. My mother-in-law is Itlian and feeds my daughter lots of garlic and other things that giver her bad breath. I keep a food journal that way I know what gave her bad breath or if it is being caused by something else. When I brush her tongue, I have my daughter stick out her tongue or I take one of the soft fingure brush things you use on baby's gums if she won't. Then I brush her tongue while I make funny noises. She loves it and it helps.

DB---u know what? my son's diet is restricted too and he went through a period of really bad breath at about 16 months too--he's 20 months, now. but anyway, it lasted for a month or so no matter what I did, but his breath got much better. the only thing I added was I brushed his teeth after lunch and before he goes down for an afternoon nap! don't worry about diet and things...if you feel you are doing things healthy, you're probably okay. maybe this one is like the phase my son went through. now he is going through WORSE THAN STINKY poops, although his diet hasn't changed much but i can barely stomach changing his diaper. i hope this one is a phase too...

this must be kind of scary. Seeing as you posted this on the first of the month, I'm assuming you've already see your pediatrician?
What did they say? I'm curious about the results...if it ended up being a virus or a digestional issue or what?

Ladies,

Thank you so very much for all your advice and concern. Three days after I posted the "gross breath" problem,(and the night before her pediatrition appointment) we ended up in the emergency room. Rowan had a 103 degree fever and was lethargic and inconsolable. After several lab tests (strep culture, urinary analysis) the doctor concluded it was a viral infection. He said that it's not uncommon for bad breath to manifest during the incubation period of the virus before more severe sypmtoms appear. Like all viral infections, all you can really do is ride it out. We did and she is happy and healthy again. And back to her normal sweet-breathed self:) I apologize for not following up sooner, and again thank you all for your concern.

I'm glad to hear your daughter is doing better now! Thank you for posting this. I never would have thought much of bad breath, but after reading this, now I know it is definitely something to watch out for as a warning sign of a virus!

I agree with Lauren. Thanks so much for posting this! I would never have really thought anything about bad breath. I have never heard that it could be a sign of illness. Thanks again! I am glad that your little girl is better.
