Cutting nails?!?!?
How and when do you cut the toenails of a 2 months old?????

I can cut my daughter's fingernails without any problem after she falls asleep. However, as soon as I start on her toenails, she starts squirming. Any advice? I'm afraid, if I don't cut it soon, she will have problems. And I REALLY don't want that!!!
Thanks!

Hi,
There are a lot of good suggestions on the link below...This question was raised a couple of months ago in this group.

Well, when my daughter was 2 months old, she didn't really have toenails to cut. They were very short and didn't start growing until a few months later. Since then, I've experimented. I tried doing it after a bath when she is calm while she's laying on her changing table. I found that sometimes the nails are too soft and I can't get the clipper underneath it to cut. Now I do it in the morning or right after a nap. Either way, I make sure she is well rested and isn't too squirmy. I make sure I hold her ankle tight enough (but not too tight) so that she can't kick. I also kiss her feet when I'm all done and make it a game...

I also recommend getting baby clippers that have a large handle for adult hands...I had a teeny tiny one that was perfect for baby, but too small for me to control. Safety 1st makes a good one...

Good luck!

My friend gave me some wonderful advice when my son was 5 months old. She told me that she had been cutting her daughters' fingernails and toenails while she was awake since they were a couple months old. I started doing the same with my son and it has worked out wonderfully. He finds the clippers facinating, so he watches while I do it. Then for his toes, I lay him down and my husband occupies him or I give him a book and I cut them fast. Of course, I only have to cut them once a month or so.
As far as cutting your daughter's toenail, I don't think I cut my sons until he was 5 or 6 months old. They did not grow like his fingernails and since he did not put them in his face, I did not have to worry about him cutting himself with them. If you want to do it though, I would suggest facing away from her, holding her foot in your hand firmly, and even is she squirms, dont let her foot move, and just do it fast. You could also check with your dr to see if they think your daughters toenails need to be cut. She could probably go awhile without having any problems with them, even if you didn't cut them.

I use to cut my daughter's nails while she was asleep. Her feet are very tickleish so I would do her toes over two nights. I looked at both feet and cut which ever ones are the longest and went slow. If she started to move I took a break. Now she is older and sits in a high chair to eat. So now I give her a special snack and grab a foot, cut the nails quickly, and try not to tickle her feet.

Thanks for all the advice!!!
I will check with the Dr. the next time. However, I see that some of her nails (big toe and a couple others) are long already. I only want to cut the ones that are long....Hopefully, even if I don't cut it for a while, she won't have problems, like I do sometimes... :(
