BF; Weaning; Diet
Hi Everyone,

My daughter is 7 1/2 months old, and I'm starting to think about the possibility of weaning in a few months. The problem is, I don't know how to do it as far as what to feed her in place of breast milk. What are a baby's diet needs at this point? And how much fluid do I give her if she's not BFing? What kind of fluid? Do I have to give her formula or cow's milk? I don't really want to go to cow's milk because my husband and I are vegan. Any wisdom ladies???

I'm sorry I cannot provide much help when it comes to answering your question, but I do havbe a similar question. My daughter is 15 months and is weaning herself. She drinks whole milk regularly (too much whole milk, in fact). She also eats some fruits and veggies and cheerios and all kinds of table foods. I worry about her diet though. She is very healthy right now. It is just hard for me to figure out how much she should be eating and drinking. I never worried when I was bf-ing because all of the nutrients were right there for her. What do we need to do differently now?

I would try soy milk. Cow's milk is hard to digest. How many times a day is your daughter bf? Some mom's do formula. I did a little of both. My suggestion would be to do an 8 oz bottle of formula at night before bed. I would slowly introduce soy milk around a year. If you are ready to wean slowly replace each feeding with a bottle. My son is 6 months. He takes an 8oz bottle of breastmilk when I can't nurse him. Every babies needs are different. Try to eliminate the day feeding first. The night time one is usually the toughest.

I have found books by Dr. Sears and Womanly Art of Breastfeeding to be the most helpful in this area with my first son.
