I couldn't find a group for parents of middle schoolers so I hope I fit into this group. My 12 1/2 year old has turned into a nightmare middle schooler and I don't have any friends with girls this age. It is intense! I could use some support from moms who've been there. :-) |

Welcome Dana, You should fit right in to this group. I have always felt that these are the hardest times for kids and parents. |

Hi Dana!
I have a girl the same age who started being a nightmare in 5th grade. We've homeschooled her ever since and some of the problems have gotten better, but, hey, puberty and puberty and there's only so much you can do about it!
So what's going on? |

Hi Dana,
I am new to the group and I am so glad you asked that question! I have a 13 year old daughter who is just SO difficult to deal with as far as her attitude. She thinks the world revolves around her! No offense to anyone but when my mother in law tells me "It'll get better" I only want to scream! It started 2 days before school started in September and she can't fall asleep' We have tried therapy, doctors etc and now she takes Benedryl every night before bed! I know that effects her attitude too! Thank you for letting me know there are others out there going through the same thing! I am here if you need to vent ... like I just did! |

My sd is 13 just started her period and thinks that now that shes a lady we should bend the rules to her cause shes a grown up and knows it all!Benadryl is bad!A woman at my old church took it to sleep and now she has liver problems and high blood pressure and her heart was doing weird stuff.Shes now on 3 diff kinds of meds cause she took it for so long.It also afects their behavior in the negative.I would try and find something in the herbal area so that she can get relief another way.As far as attitude we are having to crack down when she comes here cause her alcoholic mom wont and dont care what her daughter does. |

2 of many alternatives to "medicine" for sleep:
Melatonin and Valarian, both usually available at your local pharmacy or discount store. Valarian works well for me, though I have to get it out of the bottle and take it as fast as I can - it smells like stinky feet!
I used to get good results from L-tryptophan, but they took that off the market.
Also, relaxation techniques (her school counselor should be able to help her with that if you are familiar with them). |
