Pleasant title, I know, but realistic problem nonetheless. My daughter just turned 15 months old and has been slightly constipated for the past week. She is able to have bowel movements but only a little comes out and it is obviously painful for her. She is usually in the middle of playing and all of a sudden will squat down and cry in pain. I feel so badly for her but I do not know what to do or what the cause is. She is weaning herself from breastfeeding currently and drinking almost 30 oz of whole milk each day. I'm not sure if this could be cause for constipation? She also eats a decent amount of fruits, veggies, and cheerios, as well as a variety of table foods. She drinks milk and water very well but outright refuses any type of juice. I keep trying more juices to help ease it for her, but she won't drink more than a sip or 2. I've also been giving her foods high in fiber, but so far nothing has helped much. Is there anything other than juices and Pedialyte to help her? Any advice? |

Hi Lauren, Yeah I've been there a few times, I'm a mom of 3, I know what you mean its almost just as painful to watch, it makes you feel so bad. Well first off she's drinking way too much milk, she should only be getting 8-10 oz. a day, but, yes the transition from breastmilk to whole milk can be a huge part of her constipation plus the amount she is drinking. One thing that might help is prunes, they sell those small 2.5oz. baby food jars, if she wont eat it straight up you can mix it in anything that she likes to eat, but, dont go overboard on that either I would do half a jar at a time and no more than 2 jars within 2 days or so, if that doesn't work I would contact her pediatrician that might tell you to pick up one of those over-the-counter enemas which wont be pleasent for her but will definitley help. Well, good luck! |

We had this problem also...I was finding marble type poops in my daughter's diaper!
Anyway, the pedi advised be to stay away from bananas, rice, apples, and pears. He also said to soften the stool a bit, to try prunes, grapes, plums, and oranges. He recommended 8-12 oz of water a day as well. Within a day or two the poops were more like normal for my daughter. Now, I give her prunes every other day and she is right as rain.
Good luck! |

Where do you get the 8 - 10 ounces of milk reccomendation? Everything else I have heard is at least 24 ounces. She is no longer nursing at all most days, so the whole milk is the only milk she drinks. She also drinks plenty of water everyday. She does eat bananas and apples frequently, so maybe we'll try to cut back on those and see if it makes a difference. She hasn't seemed to be in pain so much the past couple of days, but the diapers haven't changed much. Thanks for the advice! |

Hi Lauren, I'm just going by what my pediatrician recommended, I guess though you have to take into account the childs age and growth ( height & weight ) and also any other dairy that's in their diet ( cheese, yogurt ) My youngest is 13 months old, and falls a little lower than average on the scales as far as his weight ( he's in the 30 % ) So I guess maybe just ? your pediatrician . Good luck hope your daughter is feeling better. |

Thank you! I have been trying to cut back on mil a little. I've also been putting water in her bottles so the times where she's wanting milk but is just thirsty and doesn't really need it I can substitue water. That seems to be helping. She has been doing better the past week and the past couple of days has been going more normally. we have a check up tomorrow at the pediatrician so I will ask him for more advice then. |
