I was wondering if anyone knows anything more about baby bottles and sippy cups having toxins when heated. I heard some about it on the news, but I don't know what kind of bottles are safe. I know glass bottles are safe, but I can't find any anywhere. I always hand wash my bottles and now the sippy cups, but I'm still worried. Let me know what everyone else is thinking about this subject. Thanks |

There's a particular chemical compound you want to look for when you buy plastic water bottles, but I don't know anything about baby bottles or sippy cups (don't use the baby bottles and am not going to discard my very old sippy cups now that we're finally seeing the light at the end of that particular tunnel). You can look it up online at babycenter.com and probably find out more than you want to know about the issue. |

The bottles that don't have the chemical you are talking about are the opaque plastic (not the see-through, clear ones). They look a little cloudy I guess you could say. Which singles out almost all that are on the market. The ones that are safe, the name escapes me but they are not sold at regular stores. You'll have to check online. I personally haven't bought them because my daughter dictated the type of bottle I had to buy. She will only take Dr. Browns. So, whatever works for you and your kid(s). If you are extremely worried, but cannot find the "safer" bottles, I would just keep your bottles out of microwaves. The bottle will also come with instructions on what temp is safe and what not to go over. So depending on that, you might need to keep them out of the dishwasher as well. Also, don't leave them in direct sun (same goes for plastic bottles that we drink water out of). There's more info online. |

Born Free is the name of one plastic bottle that is safe to use. I changed mine after hearing about chemicals that aren't safe for your baby. I never heard about sippy cups though. You can order them online. |

My pediatrician warned me about the sippy cups when I brought my son for his 15 month check up and I had one that may be bad... I hadn't heard anything about it yet at that point. She said that the 'bad' ones were # 7's. They should have a number on the bottom, I guess..... |

Hi,
I did hear about that on the news. My baby girl hasn't taken a bottle at all, but now that she is learning to use a cup the whole plastice thing has worried me too. You can find glass bottles on WalMart.com. I am not so sure about which plastics are safe and which are not. I think it is ok to use plastice as long as you hand wash an do not use the microwave to heat formula and such in plastci containers etc etc. |

I, too, was concerned about current news reports and studies regarding toxins in baby bottles and sippy cups and have done alot of research as a result. The chemical in question is called Bisphenol A or BPA and is used in the manufacture of most plastic products. This chemical is found to be released faster and in greater quantities when sterilized with heat or filled with hot liquid. The scary part is that they have even found traces of it, albeit small, in bottles and cups that were not heated and contained cold or room temp liquid. The danger this chemical creates is that it has been shown to release toxins to brain cells. Obviously very scary stuff. I, too buy the Born Free brand and although they are a bit pricey, they are the sturdiest bottles I have ever seen. I bought mine at The Whole Foods Market, but you can also purchase them on Diapers.com and several other baby related web sites. |
