Hello my name is Kim and I have a 2 1/2 yr old boy who is in a play group type of early steps intervention thing and it seems to be helping and he has speech therapy twice a week at home, any other advice for me to get his words out? Thanks ,Kim |

Hi Kim, and welcome to our group! As far as your question goes, I know some of us have been told to “make” our children “ask” for everything. At least to make an attempt to ask I should say. Diego seems to help us, too. My son is 3 and LOVES Diego. Most days we sit down and watch it together. I have to say, together is the key for us. When Diego asks a question, many times my son, Arden, will answer him on his own. If he doesn’t, I ask him the question and often times he will at least attempt to answer. Often, thanks to tivo, I will pause Diego for a minute and work on the pronunciation of the word, since he has a lot of problems getting the word to come out correctly (we do this with the words that are similar to what he is working on in speech therapy). Anyway, this might work with other shows, if your son doesn’t like Diego, but the way the questions are asked on Diego make my son want to answer with more words than just “yes” or “no.” We try to work on word drills, like he does in speech, but he doesn’t want to “play that game” with me. Hopefully this might help a bit, along with the other feedback you get from folks here.
Again, Welcome to the group and make yourself at home!

Hi Kim and welcome! We are in the early stages of trying to decide what to do. My son's pedi won't give him a diagnosis of speech delay as she feels he is fine and will start yakking it up by 3 or before. I am perplexed as to what I should do.
She recommended a preschool type environment to get him active with kids, since he mimics everyone and is so eager to learn right now.
I have been working extensively myself with Jake for a couple of months. I have several DVD's that were recommended to me by someone that has a boy with speech delay and high functioning autism. They worked great for her, and are working great for us! Major improvement in Jake's speech, and you have the opportunity to use them any hour of the day, not just when your scheduled therapy is.
Check out the info in the Lists/Resources in the right column of your screen.
Best wishes and good luck with your son's development! Keep us updated on his progress... we love hearing success stories and even the downside of dealing with this issue. It helps to talk out your frustrations... there can be quite a few. A :o) |
