I have mixed feelings about vitamins. On one hand they can help where my daughter (1 year) might need a little extra but at the same time I don't want to overload her. She loves fresh fruit, and all veggies but I have a hard time getting her to eat meat. We've experimented different ways of cooking it but she just doesn't seem to like meat, chicken is the worst to her. So i worry about her protein intake. Are baby vitamins a good idea? If so which ones and what kind. i.e. the gummy ones?
And on another note, i never know what to feed her when i'm home with her. I work part time and while i'm at work she goes to daycare and they tell me she eats like a horse at daycare but she won't eat for me. I think i might just be trying the wrong foods, but i just don't know what to feed her. Any tips on simple yet nutritious lunches and dinners? |

So is it basically meat that your daughter does not like?
Try mixing the little peices of meat in with something else, she may just not like the texture, so if you introduce it slowly like mixing it with adult applesauce or cottage cheese. My daughter loves mac and cheese, brown some hamburger and mix it in with that. Also she loves the really thin sliced sandwich meat from kings soopers, it is so thin it isn't hard for her to chew and she likes pulling it apart herself. Chef boyardie Ravioli, has small chunks of meat and is covered by the sauce also. Chicken nuggets,they are breaded and the meat texture isn't the same and she will love holding that too.
I would worry about giving her the gummy bears and her choking but I have seen a liquid vitamin out there, I think it was at target. I would definately ask the doc first. Like you said you don't want to overload her. Let me know if any of these work:) |

It's my understanding (I could be wrong) that whatever nutrients a body doesn't need, gets exposed of as waste. Taking vitamins and eating healthy shouldn't hurt.
As for getting your daughter to eat meat...I agree with the previous poster about hiding the meat in other foods, however, I wouldn't recommend trying to "trick" her. That would only set her up for only eating it that way in the future.
You could try some things that have worked for me in the past. Put some pieces of the meat you want her to eat on a plate. When she refuses, make two piles (one large, one small). Taking some pieces away tends to ease the anxiety of eating nonpreferred foods. When she is a bit older (of you are still having this problem, tell her she can choose which to eat...the small pile, or the large pile. Having her choose gives HER the control (but YOU are still in control of making her eat it). Then, monitor her eating. Encourage her to take one bite of the meat, and then she can have a bite of the preferred food (the potatoes or fruit for example). Do not let her eat all the preferred items first!!! Use them as a reward for eating the meat. You may even have to keep the preferred foods out of her reach. Most importantly, DO NOT GIVE IN! Start small....a few pieces each meal, then add more as you (and she) get used to the routine at mealtime. Use the same kind of meat until she is used to eating it (in other words...don't offer her chicken one night, and something else the next few nights). Be consistent in your demands and praise her when she does what you want her to do.

I would definitely talk to your doc about the vitamins because you can overdose on some and they can be harmful to the kidneys and liver. As for not eating meat well, my little girl was like that about a month ago. I don’t think she really new how to chew it. So, I got protein in her other ways, for example beans and tofu. I would also buy whole grain fortified with Omega 3 pasta and made Mac and Cheese from scratch with a really easy recipe my mom gave me. About a week ago, I had a turkey sandwich and she pulled some of the meat off and ate it. Ever since she has been eating whatever meat I put in front of her. I have noticed that her teeth are longer and she is getting a few more, so I think that is why she is now going after the meat. Also you can ask the daycare what she is eating during the day. Some have menus for the parents if they ask for one. |
