cloth diapers?
Hello! Does anyone here use cloth diapers?
Posted by Johnnia on 05/12/2008 09:25 PM

I don't use cloth, but I am thinking about it. My mom used cloth of me. It addes a lot to the laundry, but I am beginning to think it would be worth it. Do you use cloth and have any advise?

Hi. I use cloth diapers. I started when my son was 14 months old and he is now 4. I have used them on my next two children as well, my youngest currently is 4.5 months old. What got me started was that I was so tired of literally throwing my money in the trash. So, I started doing research and came upon this site, www.diaperpin.com
Its a great place to start reading on all the different diapers out there. Another really good thing to do is buy a few different kinds of diapers to decided which ones you like. Some people prefer only using prefold and covers, the 'old fashioned' style. Cloth diapers now a days are SO Fantastic! WAY better than what our mothers used and SO MUCH better than disposables.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask! I can send you to my favorite cloth diaper sites as well.
Hope this helps!

I agree, there are so many different types that its daunting to start! With a newborn, most people use the chinese prefold (CPF) diapers with a cover. The most popular cover is the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap (BSWW). Also Kissaluv's are great for that newborn stage..these are also used with a cover. After the first few weeks, there are many different styles to choose from. Pockets, All-In-Ones (AIOs), fitteds, CPFs, One Size (OS). Its all really a matter of preference. A great site to start on is www.thediaperhyena.com
They have awesome tips on folding, washing, styles of diapers, you name it!
Don't let all that beautiful fluff scare you away...although I will warn you...its sooooo addicting! LOL

I recommend starting small. Buy one or two diapers to try them out before you buy a huge stash and then decide you don't like them. diaperswappers is a great place to get gently used diapers for a great price. That way you can see what will work for you.

Hi Kimber Lee and all,

Once I decide on the type that works best for me, do you have any recommendations for how many I should buy so that I'm not doing laundry every single day but still have a good stock to work with? Thanks!

When I first decided to use cloth diapers I bought a kit from www.ourgreenhouse.com which came with four covers, 24 prefolds, and a roll of disposable liners. I only had to wash diapers every other day (i did that for a month). Now I have 63 prefolds and 8 covers. I only wash diapers twice a week (wed & sat).

Hi Johnnia~ You could get away with anywhere from 12-24 diapers (or less and wash every other day). It can be pricey up front but sooooo worth it. As for washing, I don't do anything special, like dunking although if your diapering a toddler and their poop is more solid its easier to get rid of if you just shake it into the toilet. After I change my baby, I just toss the whole thing into a garbage can that I only use for my diapers. I don't have a diaper liner but you can get one from most cloth diaper sites if you want. When it comes to wash day, I just dump the whole load into the washer using about 1/4 amount of a regular wash and start it up. I go through a cold wash and the 2 hot washes, only using the soap on the 1st load to avoid build-up. Another good idea is to use about 2 TBSP of white vinegar in a downy ball for the rinse cycle, it can help with odor and build-up as well. Once a week I take my 'diaper pail' into my shower and I just shake a little bit of baking powder into the bottom of my trash can and rinse with a little bit of white vinegar (it disinfects and its fun for your kids to watch too! LOL) and water and then let it air dry. It can be as simple or as difficult as you want to make it. If you get stains on your diapers a cheap and easy idea is to lay them out in the sun. Its amazing how well it works! Even for tough stains.
Good luck and keep the questions coming! lol

I only do one wash in hot water (1/2 detergent, 2/3 cups baking soda), 2 rinses with 1/4 cup vinegar....

i am thinking of using them for my 3rd child b/c it will save us lots of money. go to clothdiapers.com and they have really good package deals. i think that is who i will go through. here is one of their good deals:)

3 dozen infant 4x8x4 prefolds,
2 dozen premium 4x8x4 prefolds
8 Bummi Super Whisper Wraps (4 small, 4 medium).
a roll of Bioflush Disposable Liners

Choose from velcro or snaps on the Super Whisper Wraps. Prefolds can be either bleached or unbleached. Regular price for these items purchased separately would be $208.00, package price only $169.95. To subsitute Bummis Super Whisper Wrap in a Froggy print add $10.00. Add a Mini-Shower diaper cleaner and save $5.00 off the regular price.

We have always ised cloth diapers. I love them. I think they are easier than disopals. We started with the prefolds and have upgraded to kisiluvs. We currently use an All In One(AIO) for our 2 and half year old at night. It is great and we don't have to change her. My favorite site is http://www.jilliansdrawers.com/, she was a work at home mom who just opened up an actual store and she is teachin now at Brown (I think). She also has a try cloth diapers for 10.00 program. Mandi is wonderful. She can explain all the ins and outs of diapering. You can also invest in a mini-shower. It attaches to your toilet and you use it like a sprayer. It helps with stains. We have been cloth diapering for almost 2 and half years and wouldn't change it for the world. We even do it when we go on vacation.

Hi all,

Did anyone of you receive any resistance from your husbands when you told him that you were considering switching to cloth diapers? I change like 99% of the diapers anyway, but I hate to think that because he isn't exactly thrilled at the idea of cloth diapers that he won't help me in the changing duties. We have three indoor cats so I guess he feels like we handle enough poop in this house (ha ha ha) but I'm really excited about trying it and I'd like to think that he will get on board. Any one have a similar experience/any advice?

Thanks

My husband loves the diapers. He was hesitant at first, but now that we are on our second baby he comments on how much money they have saved us and how easy they are.

My husband doesn’t get a say since we are separated and he doesn’t help me out with anything….but I don’t think he would say anything since he never changed any of our older children’s diapers…

Just this past week, I have been thinking about changing my 17 month old to cloth diapers. I have a baby due in October, so that's the real reason why.

Can you tell me for those that started with disposables. What did you find as your biggest challenge with them? How much money did you spend on your diapers? How much work is it to upkeep cleaning the diapers? Do they smell?

I guess I am still remembering cloth diapers from when I babysat years ago and we had to dunk the diapers in the toilet to get the pooh out and it was absolutely gross and disgusting.

If it saves so much money, I may really change to cloth. THanks for these tips!!!

Over the past four months I’ve invested $200 into cloth diapers and they have paid themselves off a few times. For the smell use baking powder in your diaper pail. I use a trash bin with a cover and I sprinkle baking soda in the bin and it helps keep the smell down. I was all of my diapers and covers in Gain original scent with baking soda and I use vinegar rinse. I hope that helps!

Hi Carrie Anne,

Fuzzi Bunz makes a diaper pail liner that has a cloth tab at the bottom. I haven't tried it yet but I know some one that has and she puts tea tree oil on the tab and says that it eliminates all odors. Then you just dump the dirty diapers into the washer and throw the liner in with it. You can find the liner on cuddlebunz.com. There is also something called a mini-shower that you can purchase that you hook up to the intake hose on your toilet. You can use that to literally wash the poo into the toilet instead of dunking them in with your hands. Who wants to do that!!!
