dentist
When should I get my son a dentist? He is 5months old and has 2 teeth, they came in within a week of eachother. I feel its a bit too early for one but I wasn't sure. I've already started brushing his teeth and he finds it funny so I know that won't be a problem later on. Any advice?

Hi Amers,

I am in Florida and on WIC. They tell me my boys should start going to the dentist when they are three years old, unless there is a problem. If there is a problem your boy is having with his teeth then you should call a ped. dentist or his doctor right away.

I hope this helps.

Hello my ped said they start to send them at age 2. But it just depends on if they have a problem and need to, I'm wiating till my daughter is at least 3. We brush twice and day, so yes your doing great starting early.

I took my son at age 1 1/2 just because he threw a fit when we brushed his teeth and I felt like we weren't getting them brushed very well, the dentist said they looked great to keep up the routine and he didn't need to see him until he was three unless there was a problem. I would suggest starting the rountine of brushing daily now, its never to early and I have heard just use water and I have also heard that you can use a tiny bit of flouride when he starts to get a lot of teeth, I would think water would be all you need to do now. I used to dampen a cloth with water and rub it over his gums and wipe his teeth when he was your sons age.

Yes, pedi recommended brushing his teeth with a damp cloth. Brushing should start at 1year old with flouride free toothpaste and as for when to take him to the dentist ask your pedi. I read some moms magazines they said just to take them for a look at 1yr old, but I will ask my pedi to be sure. I think the 3year mark would be perfect! Just keep brushing and if its funny, that is LOL good for you!

We started brushing our son's teeth as soon as those first two pushed through. Now he's 19mo. and working on his 2yr. molars! We were advised by our pediatrician to take him no sooner than age 2 unless there's a serious problem with his mouth/teeth.
We use a regular toddler brush and the flouride free toothpaste and since we've been doing it for so long, he's great at letting us brush...even in the back and his tongue too!

My son starting cutting teeth at an early age and I used the finger toothbrush with the Gerber toothpaste. Now that he is 20 months and we are using a toddler toothbrush twice a day, he tends to fuss alot. We actually took him to the dentist at 18 months just to make sure everything was OK and I guess it was that "new mom" concern.

I asked my dentist about this (Emma is 9 months old and cut her second tooth yesterday). My dentist said it is very rare that he would find cavities in a child under the age of three, so he said to start brushing as soon as her teeth started coming through and not to worry about making an appointment for her until she's three. I've also heard that a damp washcloth is good for wiping baby's gums too. I found Emma hated the washcloth, but loves a baby toothbrush with a tiny bit of gerber baby toothpaste on it.
