Hey Ladies!
I'm a SAHM of 4 yr old boy/girl twins. We live in Gulfport, MS...and are debating whether or not to send them to preschool or not.
Any thoughts for those that have already been thru this???
One of the big things is $$. Our options are private school for K4 or a "day care" setting...either of them will cost $, and at $500 + a month for both of them, we are on the fence.
I would need to go to work at least part time, but I want to be able to go on field trips, and be off work when they are out of school...the idea behind being a SAHM. :)
Your thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated.
Take care, God Bless, Julie D

Wow, that'[s a lot of money! My daughter goes to private pre-school, which is only 2 days a week for 2 1/2 hours each of those two days. It only costs around $160 a month. I think that pre-school is great for socialization and for getting the kids used to a routine and authority. BTW, I have a 4yo daughter Olivia. |

Hi Julie, Yeah that does sound like alot of $ I would do a little more research and maybe check out if there are any other options. I would definitely send them though I have a almost 5 yr.old who's just about finishing his 2nd. yr. and a almost 4 yr. old almost finishing her 1st. yr. I think it has helped them greatly in many ways! Especially in socialization and structure , plus its also something fun for them to do outside of the home. It definitely helps prepare them for whats ahead. Good luck. |

Hey Julie! I have a 5 yr old and kept him home an extra year from kinderten because he had no transition period into all day everyday kinderten. He goes to a home based pre-school which is a little cheaper than a larger setting ($100.00 per month roughly). He loves it and it has helped him so much. He has more self esteem and socializes verry well with kids his own age. You will be paying a chunk of chang no matter what pre-school, but it is so worth it and it is an investment in their future. |

Hi Julie I have a 5yr old and were from a small town so we were able to get him the prek no fee but we do pay for breakfast. He only goes for two hours and 45 min, but he loves it. He use to be shy and not talk to anyone he does not know but now he is getting out of that shell and is doing great. So I would send them. Its great, I know I have a friend that sends hers to a private school and there are finacial aids that help her out. So you might want to look into that. |

My daughter was the same way. The first few months were awful. Now she does great with everyone and has made some friends. We've had a couple playdates. Good luck! |

Look for a cooperative preschool. These programs are run by the families currently enrolled. The parents take turns working in the classroom alongside the teacher (saves money on salaried staff). We also all take jobs that would normally be paying positions to outside parties (saves more money). Parents have a lot of say in all aspects of the program as they actually own the school. You also get to be there first hand for a lot of your child's journey and new experiences!! The costs are significantly lower than traditional programs. At ours we average one day per month in the class as a working parent. All three programs run under $80/month. The 2 y/o parent-tot is 90 mins once a week, the 3 y/o is 2 hours twice a week, and the 4 y/o is 2 1/2 hours twice a week. With prices like this, you won't need to get a part time job (unless you want to!). |
