I am in the Air National Guard and have been told that I may be deploying later this year. Of course they will be as vague as possible until closer to the date, but I am worried since I have a 14 month old and I am a SAHM (except for my "part-time" job). It will be a huge culture shock for my hubby and my son to not have me around for a while. I know other women do it. I just want to know how they do it and how they get through it. We are putting Brett in a "mommy's day out" program this fall so that he can get used to the interaction with other kids. Now I am seeing this is a good thing in case we have to put him into daycare while I am away.
God be with all of you who have spouses deploying. Lisa |

Although I am no longer Active Duty, I spent 10 years in and was deployed a couple of times as a mom before I got out. I think getting you little one used to a day care type of environment will do the whole family some good. My husband is currently deployed so I can give you some pointers from both sides. If you have any specific concerns let me know, I'll share whatever wisdom I can.
A nice thing to do is to record yourself with a video camera reading some books so that your son can still have a goodnight story read by mommy. Also a My Mom loves me type of photo album. It doesn't have to be anything hugely fancy, just pictures of the two of you together and you with your hubby so your son can see you as still being part of the family.
A big thing will be to remember that you and your husband do things differently. That was a big one for me while I was gone, or when I came back rather.
See if your base has some family support programs, especially during the reintegration portion.
Let me know if you have any other ideas.
Good luck and God Bless!!

Thanks for the tips. Just thinking about it makes me tear up a little. As for support from our base - I'm not so sure since we are guard and not active duty. I am glad I asked this question sooner rather than later as I can get some of these things together for him. Thank you again! Lisa |

One of my friends just told me about www.ourmilitarykids.org It doesn't help me since my DH is AD, but it'll help you... it's specifically for guard and reserve families. I've been told you can apply for up to $500 to pay for camp, tutoring, sports and all kids of other stuff for the kids while you're deployed. Check it out, might be worth your time!
