Baby acne/eczema
My seven week old is suffering from eczema. It looks so bad. And i think it bothers him, because he gets fussy when I try to put creams on it. Any one have any suggestions on how to treat it???

Hi Kristi, my daughter also has eczema. She isn't very frustrated with itm, but she gets it all over. I would recommend using Gentle Naturals Baby Eczema Cream and the body wash. (they smell nice too) I purchased it at Walgreens in the baby isle. It works great. The lotion is absolutely wonderful. You can see her eczema going away. You can still see the areas where the rash was, but it starts to fade away. I also used cetaphyl (I think I might have mispelled it) it is a very gentle wash for the babies skin. Yo may also want to use Aveno Baby lotion it is scent free and a great lotion for in between the use of the other lotion. I also use the Aveno Baby sunblock. However, just be careful on certain things you feed him as it my be inflammed by certain foods. Let me know how he does on it. Or if you find something else that works well.

Both of my brothers and their two kids have eczema. My son started to have a little bit on his face. Have you had it checked by your pediatrician? All those options given by the other mom are great. I use the Aveeno Cream for his face and I always make sure to put lotion all over his body after his bath. He hates the lotion but it keeps his skin hydrated. You can try these over-the-counter suggestions if the eczema is not very severe. If it is, there are prescription creams you can use to help with flare ups. You should discuss it with your pediatrician.

You can try also "aquaphor", the offcial cream used in the NICU. It is great! My cousin uses with her son and it seems the only one that works for him.

Vero is right, the Aquaphor healing ointment is excellent. My daughter is 7 months old and suffers from eczema. Some days are much better than others. You can find the ointment at Wal Mart, CVS, Walgreens etc. The larger jar costs about $15 but lasts awhile. The other mother also had some good advice and I use those products on my daughter as well. The Aveeno products with Oatmeal are also good.

I also use Aveeno but I use the Anti-Itch lotion...it stopped my 2 mos old son's itchiness immediately...he has it on his face near his eyes and on his elbows. I tried Aquaphor and that worked but didnt cure the itchiness. Good luck...

Just make sure to stay away from hydrocortisone cream until you check with your doctor. Most of the OTC anti-itch creams have hydrocortisone. It's a steroid and can affect baby's immune systems. Since babys have a large surface area and thin skin, they are more likely to absorb it into their bloodstream. By the way, I'm a pharmacist in case you're wondering how I know that. Good luck!

The past few days i have been trying the aquaphor, it seems to help out a little. I also noticed over the weekend i was gone one night, my husband was feeding him formula, because i did not have enough breast milk stored, and the next day the eczema seemed alot better. So i have a feeling that he is sensitve to something in the breast milk. the trick now is to try and figure out what!!!!

There are a lot of things that you might be eating that he may have a reaction to. I would recommend logging what you eat so that you can notice what causes him to break out more or less, or if you are not opposed to formula feeding you might switch to that. We use enfamil lipil. It has been working very well for her. She has been on it for 5 months now.

No hydrocortisone in the Aveeno Anti-Itch cream...its all Oat based. I have 2 sister-in-laws that are Drs and combined have 7 children...they recommended this to me...its still working for my son when he has a flare up....so good luck.

I think that one the main reasons i really dont want to go the formula route, is because it is expensive . If I can breast feed , i would like to continue for a little while longer. We have xavier's two month check up thursday, so I will ask the doctor. I heard that milk and eggs are two of the big foods that can cause flare ups. I could do without eggs for awhile, but I enjoy milk too much... I love cereal..... It makes for a quick and easy food to eat when things get hectic!

This is going to be a personal question and you don't have to answer here if you don't like you can always send me and message and I will check it there. Do you work? If not you and your husband might want to check to see if you are eligible for WIC. My daughter is on it. We could pay for it if we had to, but since we are eligible we utalize it. You will also be able to get infant cereal and juice on it. WIC has been a lifesaver with money. The formula my daughter uses is expensive. Well just to give you another option. With the gentle naturals I was telling you about before, my daughter has been using the wash every other night she has a bath recommended by the doctor that she only bathe every other night, as well as right after the bath the coinciding cream and in the mornings if her skin feels extra dry. Otherwise I put the aveno on about twice a day. Her skin is really clear now, you can just see the spots were the eczema was as it is fading away.

I have eczema and so does my son. Be sure to avoid any soap or lotion that contains perfume or dye. Sun also irritates it so put on suscreen and wear a hat or cover up skin, if it's not too hot. Bathe him only every 2 or three days. Just wash hands, face and diaper area in between. Try cool or room temperature water, it's less drying than hot water. Dry the skin thouroughly after a bath. Aveeno and Aquaphor are good moisturizers to use. Use light, breathable fabrics like cotton.

If you are breastfeeding, dairy, wheat and citrus are often irritants. Try avoiding these, one at a time so you'll know which ones make a difference, and keep a diary so you'll remember what you ate or avoided that caused a change. Remember that it takes several days to possibly 2 weeks for some foods, especially dairy, to leave your system. Add time to that if you are pumping and storing.

Hope something here helps,
Marcia

Kristi, I have a 15 month old and I have been dealing with his eczema since 4 months. I bathe him with cetaphil on 2-3 times a weak and no other soaps. I use VANICREAM (prescription only) as moisturizer. He has such extreme eczema that I have 2 different steroid creams for him. All of the other moms advice has been great..good luck.

Hi Kristi,

My son has eczema also. My pediatrician recommended Dove liquid body soap for sensitive skin. It is relatively cheap, and I use it to wash his body and his hair. I also use the Aveeno anti-itch and it really seems to help. When all else fails ask your peditritian for a prescription of hydrocortisone. There is also a new hydrating lotion by prescription only named Hylira. My ped gave us some samples, but it can sometimes make it worse which it did with my son. It could work for your baby though. Good luck.
