My name is Tammy and I am a medical foster mom. The child that is part of our family at this time is Baby D. He is blind because of cancer. The cancer is called Bi-lateral retinoblastoma. He came to us when he was 10 months old and is now 20 months old. We are madly in love with him:) He goes to OT and ST once a week. He is recieveing Chemo once a month is almost done--he has one more month to go with the Chemo and then he is finished!!The Chemo he is recieving has caused him to have a mild hearing loss that is permanent. He is now being fitted for hearing aids. He is the most cuddliest sweetest little boy and the toughest person I have ever met. I am looking forward to hearing from each of you and learning from your experiences. Thanks Tammy :) |

Hi Tammy and welcome!! My name is Dawn and I have a beautiful little boy name Shaun who just happens to have Down Syndrome. My little boy is the love of my life and couldn't imagine my life without him. Your LO sounds like he has been through a lot and it breaks my heart that he has had to go through so much at such a young age. I have a gf who has a LO who is about the same age as your LO who has AML so I've seen her struggles. I've spent time at the Children's Hospital and it is amazing how positive and cheerful children with cancer are. Do they feel he will be in remission once they are done? I hope so....he sounds like a blessing. My son Shaun receives OT, ST, and has a EI teacher besides the fact I am a full time nursing student and a single mom so we are very busy but I'm loving it. It's wonderful that your LO was blessed with such a loving family. Hope to hear more from you. Dawn |

Hi Dawn--I have never asked what his prognosis is. I am not sure that I want to know. We just take it one day at a time the best we can. The cancer is not growing while he is on the Chemo--so I am hoping that it will not come back while he is off of it. I guess only time will tell and I believe in the power of prayer and he has a lot of people praying for him. We are just going to love him as hard as we can each day and try to expose him to as much of the world as we can and pray and trust for the best.
I'd love to hear more about your LO--sounds like a sweetheart :) |

I so understand taking it day by day. I'm so happy to hear he has so much love around him. My little guy is a sweetie. It seems like everyone that comes into contact with him just can't help but fall into his charms. I'm very blessed that we don't have a lot of health issues. He has done well with gross motor skills but fine motor skills he struggles with as well as he has cognitive delays. He recently started walking and he keeps me very busy. I couldn't ask for a better lil boy. I have two older children a son Anthony who will be 22 in May and a daughter Elizabeth who is 19.
You are welcome to contact me at dmv2165@yahoo if you would like to chat further or you can reach me through this site. It's so nice to meet you and learn about your family...I will keep Baby D in my prayers. I need to run now I have lots of studying to do but please feel free to write. Until the next time...Dawn |
