Ok so now that katie is officially a year old (yeah we made it) what are the rules with cows milk. With formula it couldn't be used after an hour from being made. Does this same rule apply with cows milk? If she doesn't drink all of it can it go back in the fridge? |

I use my own rule of them for that one. If I won't drink it...I don't give it to my son. I warm the milk because he will not drink it cold out of the fridge(we are working on that). I give it 5-10 minutes. If he does not drink it then down it goes. At a year old, babies only need 20 ounces of milk and mine gets it in three or four bottles: one when he gets up in the morning, one for nap, one when I get home from work or second nap time(which doe not exist), and then one for bed. All the bottles are 6-8 ounces so mine baby is covered. He uses sippy cups all the rest of the day with water and juice. My neighbor has her son totally off the bottle at a year old, only a sippy for hi and he does well this way.
Back to your main question. If your girl will take them milk cold then I say it can go back in the fridge if you only have it out for 5 minutes or less. I will only drink really cold milk so if it is not used when it is cold, pitch it after 5-10 minutes.
What would you drink?
My story may be different though. My son is on 2% right off the breast because he is so big...30lbs at one year. |

I am not an expert on this subject, but I use to refridgerate the milk my son didn't finish, I usually wiped the bottle down with a clean paper towel or something. I think its ok, I mean he is almost 4 now and he is still alive and kicking. I guess if they are sick or have a cold maybe not save that milk and I wouldn't let it sit out too long (longer than a half hour or so) I still save his cups of milk in the fridge and he drinks from it throughout the day. Again I am no expert but it worked for me. |

Hi Amanda,
My son is two and I had this same question, how do you get them to drink it all before it starts to go bad? My solution, I tell him to drink your milk and I will say it until most of it is gone. If he seems full or just doesn't want anymore after 10 minutes or so I will put it back in the fridge. SInce I have done this from a year old, he usually drinks it all pretty quickly. Then we don't have to worry about it. Because he is two he only needs about 16 oz a day. So he gets 6 at breakfast, 6 at lunch and 6 at dinner that takes care of it and after his meals I just give him a couple of reminders to "drink your milk" and he usually finishes it off, if not I will put it in the fridge. |

With my son, he was off the bottle at 12 1/2 months. He has three sippys per day, one with each meal, with about 8 ounces of whole milk. If he does not finish it, then I put it back in the fridge for the next meal. If he does not finish it by the end of that meal(which has happened once I think) then I dump it. In between meals he gets water, with juice as a treat maybe once a week. He really likes water and the dr said that if he likes it, then just give him water because it is better for him than juice or juice/water mix. The only reason that I would think you could not put it back in the fridge is if you heat it up. My son has always taken it cold so I have not had that problem. Even when he switched from breast to formula at 7 months, I did not have to heat it up. I would also say, unless your ped tells you otherwise, give her whole milk. My ped told me that the fat in the whole milk is very important for brain development, and while I give my son skim (only if we run out of his whole milk) on occaision, he really needs the whole milk. Since I make sure that he eats healthy otherwise, with no fattening snacks or food (other than the occaisionaly treat like a slice of pizza), I have not had to worry about him gaining weight. At 16 months, he is just over 26 lbs. He was 23.5 lbs at 12 months, so having whole milk over the last 4 months has not rapisly increased his weight gain. Anyway, I know that got a bit off topic, but is it 12:30 am here and I guess I am rambling some. Hope that these post help you out though. |

Taking a Safety Sanitation class anything that sits out for more than 3 hours (dairy, meat, etc.) throw away...bacteria grows fast passing the 3 hour mark ( not recommended to reheat!)! my daughter usually drinks the milk right after I give her the bottle but I would do no more than an hour as for myself? just opinion. Ask your doctor=) |
