I have a one month old son, and I was told that you can start putting rice cereal in baby's bottle w/ formula (just 1 tablespoon) Is this too early an age to start, or have other moms started cereal at this age? |

My first child was on breast milk only for his first 8 months. The second was on formula only for about 4 months (that sucker WALKED at 7.5 months!). The third had problems with gastric reflux and we put cereal in her formula pretty early to try to weight down her food.
There is nothing nutritionally wrong with giving babies formula only for several months. If you are wanting to add cereal so the "meal" will last longer (like sleeping through the night), that works with some, but not with others.
If you choose to do cereal that early, do rice cereal to reduce the chance of developing allergies to corn, wheat, or oats.
It's not necessary to give cereal that early, but it doesn't hurt anything if you do. |

My son is almost 3 mos and I did the cereal around 1 month...the only problem is that most nipples (bottles) dont let the cereal flow through easily....you have to start with about a teaspoon and see how he does...my son became frustrated with the cereal clogging the nipple and would cry...not easy in the middle of the night...it did make him sleep longer...so that is a plus...just experiment and good luck!!! I started using the formula that came in the cans because it was thicker, that also seemed to help him sleep longer. |

I would stay away from cereal in the milk. Their digestive system is very delicate and sometimes introduce food before time can have long term effect. Definetly double check with your pediatrician but if I remember correctly you are not suppose to start before 4 or 5 monthes.

I tried rice ceral with my son when he was a month old since he had a lot of spitting up. I started with one teaspoonful for every 2 ounces. It does clog the nipples so I had to get the next level. I only gave it to him in the evening. It helped with spitting up but not with sleeping longer. I finally stopped using since his GERD has greatly improved since we changed medications. If there are no reasons your son should be on cereal, I probably wouldn't start until at 6 months. My son got very constipated from the rice cereal. That was another reason why I stopped giving it to him. You don't want to fix something that it's not broken, right? |

I wanted to add that the pediatrician is the one who told me to use the cereal....and only using the small amount is ok for their digestive system...my son also had the acid reflux and that seemed to help him....good luck |

I would discuss this with your pediatrician first, most dont recommend cereal until about 4 months old, there stomachs and digestive system can handle it yet, and NEVER put it in the bottle, they all will tell you that. My son was 4 months when he got cereal, and when he did we used breast milk to mix it and feed it to him with a spoon, a little at a time, he will get used to the spoon eventually. Good luck. |
