hi all! thought i see if anyone is doing the carb counting stuff. the doctor wants me to try it on my 4 year old, but i think she's to young for this kind of diet. toddlers burn off as much fat and carbs if not more than they eat. i'm just not comfortable with giving her adiet at all. i mean don't get me wrong, i don't feed her chocolate 24/7, but at this stage, i don't want her restricted from carbs til she's older. and i've never belived that restricting things from your diet was the way to go anyways. it's about morteration.i'd love to here what you all think. |

im one i have been one since the age of 15 months. carb counting is one of the best food plans i have been one in my life. they set it up for her age. you need to make sure she is geting the right amount of food not too much that can raise her bloodsugar very high or send it very low. and since she is young she will have the taste for the foods she needs to eat and leran controll of her diet. she can not eat what a normal kid can i still can not eat foods that people can. and it can pre her becoming over weight because diab people and kids gain weight over the meds. and it will help with her blood sugar because certain affect the bloodsugar. |

Hi there, I know this is a old post but I am new here. My daughter will be 4 next month and she was diagnosed at 13 months, so that was getting close to 3 years ago now. We have been carb counting from day one. She is not on a diet. She has the same things everyonther kid has, same as mom and dad. Of course I chose to buy the low carb versions where ever I can, sometimes not though is it just doen't taste good. Carb counting is more about portioning, or should I say more about knowing what is the portion and if your kid ate 1/2, 2, or 4 portions. Here is the thing, that means you have to read food labels for portion sizes and measure out the foods before they eat and minus out what they did not eat. At the beginning it was time consuming because she was just larning to eat. but know it probably only takes an extra 5 minute per meal. I have a nutrinational scale that is prepgrogrammed with a ton of foods that I bought a Target. Just input the code for that food and it list all the info for the weight of food you you chose to serve (no portiioning).
What is you daughters A1C.
If your kids doctor is asking you to change to carb counting, I would try it and see if you are comfortable with the change. And even if you are not, try it for 3 months and see if her A1C is better, after all better control at a youger age means less complications latter in life.
Also, with the rise in type 2, food packaging is getting better on lableling the nutrional information, I picked up potatoes the other day and the carb cout was right there.
I hope this helped rather than overwhelmed. One suggestion, would to ask you doctor/local jdrf if there is anyone your daughts age around town carb counting and meet up with them for a lunch out, so you can see how they do it. I know parents that carb count but that do not weigh food and eyeball the portion or measure with cups an spoons. |

Hi thats is what my daughter has been on since she has been 4yrs old and she does great with it. She is now 10. It to me is the best thing the doctor done for her and I...Just keep count and watch what she eats and how active she is. The doctor will show you how to do it all... |
