My son loves pick at people and since I am home with him all day I get to deal with the majority of it. He thinks this is funny to others. I have explained until I am blue in the face that it doesn't make people happy it makes them angry. This gets on my nerves so much some times that I have to walk out of the room. When he picks at other kids at the play ground they walk away from him, but the message still hasn't sunk in. why do some kids do this? I thought may be it was boredom, but even when I keep him busy all day his habit is still there. I have tried doing the same to him and he laughs.

How old is he? Where do you think he got it from? My step son does that at times and he got it from his dad. He has outgrown it a lot now because he is 12 but still very annoying at times because he just doesn't know when to stop. With his age group it is easier to explain it to him that he will just annoy people and they won't want anything to do with him. But when younger it is much harder. My husband is that way at times with me he thinks he is being funny but he really annoys me at times and I try to tell him that it is immature and that the kids see that, but then he gets offended so I just try to play around with him and redirect his picking thing.
It isn't easy with little ones because they just don't really grasp how it truly affects others. Good luck and maybe seeing you walk away enough or ignoring it will make him realize it is a bad habit. |

My son is 7 and the best I can tell he may have picked up on this behavior from TV. he often repeats every thing he sees and hears on television which is why I have considered taking the TV away completely, but my husband explained that doing this would be like shielding him and we can't do that instead we have to do our best in helping him understand that charters on TV are just that and most people don't act like that way. I use to have a friend who was married to a very high per active man who liked to pick at people too and no one could stand to be around him. So it may just be a part of my sons’ personality because he has done this sort of thing for as long as I can remember. I really hope not though!

Lisa; sounds like you and I have somthing in common. My 6yr soon-to-be 7 does the same thing and doesn't seem to bother him either. I asked him why he does it and he said"I don't know(with a smirk on his face). He picks on his brothers and pushes their buttons until they explode and hit him or worse then they get in trouble(and he does too) but that doesn't stop him. He even goes to the store with me and calls a lady fat right in front of her..I had him appoligize to her and he broke into tears..I thought it stopped after that but no..I think he thinks it's a joke..I'm with ya...Rebee |
