Homemade Formula
Hello Ladies,
I am very saddened as I have had to supplement my breastfeeding with formula as I cannot pump enough for feedings when my husband or other possible caretakers need to have a bottle. Has anyone had experience with making their own formula?
Thank you,
Carrie

Carrie,

That sucks. I know how great it feels to nurse and pump. I got the flu really badly this winter and had to suplement with formula. It was sad.

I don't have any expereince with homemade formula, but the dietician who wrote "Child Of Mine" (a very reputable book on feeding babies) mentions it. Do you have the book? I will look in it and let you know what she says. I seem to remember she refrenced a website with a good recipe.

I had to give my baby formula, but that was only because she developed teeth. But I know how it feels to give them that man made crap. I haven't tried home made formula though. What is that exactually?

Charmaine,
From the little bit that I have read so far it would be made with either raw cow or goat milk and then have liquid vitamins, EFA's, etc. added in. I haven't had a chance to read too much on the subject yet though.

I have not tried making formula, but i did hear that people sell their own breast milk online... which kinda grossed me out... but anyways you should be happy you got to breastfeed.... my son absolutely refused to breastfeed.

I am referring to the previuos post about selling your breastmilk. I dont think giving away your milk is gross, I dont think I could sell it and know whom its going to, but there are milk banks that you can donate to, They send it over seas and use it in the US, it can really save premies lives. I had thought about donating mine, when we thought my newborn might have a milk allergy when he kept spitting up every time we feed him, but that resolved, I have alot of milk, my husband calls me the milk machine.

Well Carrie, good luck finding a way to make your own formula, I know hoe hard it is to give your breast feed baby formula, I had to give my first son formula about 6 months old, because once I went back to work my milk supply really dropped. Thats different now, every time I feed my son, I pump right after and save it, I also get up during the night to pump where I didnt with my first.

Enough about me, good luck.
