Hi Lisa, When my son was in the first grade, I had the same problem, you are having. First, I took him to get his eyes checked. He did need glasses, however, he never used them. (Today, he is in contacts). That was not his problem. I started with flash cards, that did not work, the break through was teaching him phonics. Once he understands how to pronounce a word based on the phonic's rules, he will start reading better. It is not a quick fix process, it takes time, but you will see a big improvement. My son was reading chapter books within a few months after I taught him the phonic's rules. I am a tutor fulltime for kids, my home business for seven years, and this process works.
