Outside Activities
I just thought I would send out a post on homeschooling and outside activities. Most families don't know that any child who is homeschooled (at least in California) can still attend any afterschool enrichment programs at their public home school. This even includes going to school football games, prom, school dances and any clubs that are on school grounds, such as the drama club. The one year my daughter did independent study, her teacher told her she was able to attend any school activity she wanted, as long as she had her school I.D. Now because this was an independent study program they had yearbooks, graduations, school pictures and school I.D. So, I am not exactly sure how this would work with pure homeschooled children. Does anyone know? I think if most families knew that their children could still attend school activities there would probably be more homeschooled children. What do you think? And has anyone experienced attending after school programs at their public home school?

I am not sure exactly but I do know at least here in Michigan your children can even take non-core classes like Choir, art gym ect. if you wanted to. I am not sure how everything else works though to be honest.

Thanks, Jody, that's good to know. I wasn't told about taking gym on the school campus. My daughter had to take her P.E. at the local community college.

This is extremely encouraging, my son would miss Band and dances. I will have to check with the school district here, and the laws in Texas. Thanks for the information.

I just called the administration for our school district in Texas. They gave an emphatic "no" along with telling me everything I was required to do if I decide to homeschool, all of which was incorrect according the the TEA website regarding homeschooling requirements. I directed them there.

School districts always distort things it seems if you contact them about things like that. I would look into your state laws and see if it's a law that they have to let them participate. I know it's a law here in Michigan. So they can't refuse us if we so choose to do that. The school just get's upset because your kids won't be adding money to their pockets ugh!!!

Jody is right, it's all about the money, unfortunately. I thought it was our children's education that was important! I would definitely look into your school district's laws or rules. I can guarantee that most teachers or office officials have no clue. Let me know what happens or what you find out. I 'm curious to know.
