Bladder Problmes

Ok, so my son is 8 years old. I don't know what the deal is, but he seems to have issues with bladder control. It seems like he waits until he has to go like NOW. I ask him why he doesn't go when he first feels like he might have to. He says that he doesn't realize he has to go until it is a mad dash for the bathroom. I am just kind of at a loss at to what to do with him.

This morning he woke himself up because he had wet the bed. Now, I know that he can sleep heavily, and that he did have a full glass of milk right before bed, (even though I had told him not to) and didn't go before going to sleep. But is there something more? Should I be worried? Is there anything that we can use to help him?

Also, I got some of the Good Nites sleep boxers, but I was wondering if anyone knew of anything else out there, that isn't so bulky looking.

Any advice is welcome!! Thanks so much

Hi Elise

I might be worth a trip to the doctor just to rule out any infections or problems that either make him want to keep it in, or are lessening his sensing that he needs to go.

OK so I agree to go to a doctor first to rule out infections. Next question to ask yourself is has he always been this way, or has it just started. As for waiting untill the last second, kids get to busy with "other things" to think about what their bodily signals are trying to tell them. They do have alarms that you can put on his bed if you want to go to that exstent, but that can be exspensive. Try not to let him drink anything about an hour and a half before bed, that will help, and make sure he goes to the bathroom before bed, even if it feels like he doesnt have to. Explain to him he needs to empty his bladder so there is more room, so he doesnt wet the bed. Even if he doesnt "have to go". More than likely he will go. It does get to be a natural reflex the older you get.
