flying with a baby/ need help
i will be flying next month across country by myself with he will be then 11 month old son. i was wondering if anyone has any advice. i can get a ticket for him but the thought of draging his car seat(its one of those big convertible car seats because he doesnt fit his infant carseat anymore) and stroller and my carry on from one flight to the next(because there are no direct flights) doesnt sound like fun to me. but then trying to hold him in my lap on a 6hour flight doesnt sound like fun either
so any advice would be helpful

Take the car seat and a bunch of quiet toys/snacks. I know it sounds like a pain to drag the car seat, but we flew with a nine month old on just an hour and a half flight and it was really bad. She didn't want to sit in my lap. Plus, i heard about this little girl being the only one alive after a plane crash because of her car seat. GOOD LUCK!!!

My son flew at about 21 months and we did not get him a seat it was a 3 hour flight, it was okay until he fell asleep then it wasn't comfortable at all, he was comfortable but we weren't, and the only thing that saved us was a portable DVD player and sticker books, I don't know if your son would be too young for all of that yet but it might buy an hour or so for you. Just take a movie he really likes, and if he doesn't have one start showing him one now. The only thing my son will watch is Curious George on PBS He watches about 30 min at a time but during the flight we had a DVD with about 6 shows. Also I don't know what time your flight is but try to keep him up a little longer before the flight so he will nap the hum of the airplane made my son sleepy. Best of Luck.

I forgot to tell you, I saw someone on our flight with a booster seat, it wasn't as big and bulky as a carseat but he would only have a lap belt holding him in, you can also request a skycap to help you with all your carryon, you are probably paying enough for a ticket that you can get a little help to get from one gate to the next.

Hi Rebecca!
We haven't flown in a few months. The first time we flew, our daughter was 4 months, and the second time she was 6 months, and the last 7 months. But the worst time was the 4 months, suprisingly. We were advised to make sure she was nursing or drinking, and swallowing because of the elevation and air pressure on their poor ears. many parents weren't doing that on the plane, and their kids were miserable! I felt so bad for them. But Emerie was okay about that. As she got older, she wanted to move around a lot more, so we would walk the aisles a bit once we were allowed to. Also, quiet toys and rocking her to sleep some helped. Many people say to use Benadryl, but that is risky to drug your child when you are not in a position to get them medical help should they need it asap. I gave her some Tylenol, which helped soothe her but not drug her up at the same time.
Do you have "What to expect the first year?" because there is a section in the book about flying with a kidlet. YOu could always check it out in the library or just go to a store and quickly read that section, if you don't want to buy it, lol.
Good luck! We brought all the gear on our trip last December and it was a pain, but we had me and my husband both, Its harder when its just you. Try to bring as little as necessary but the most important things. Make sure to bring an extra outfit for the plane rides (both), so if your little one gets wet in his outfit, you have a back up. We dressed Emerie in her jammies, so she felt like she could sleep and also be as comfortable as possible. Who wants to wear jeans or tight clothes on a plane ride?

You don't need to buy a ticket for him if he is younger than 2 years old but he'd have to sit on your lap in flight. If you do buy a ticket, make sure your car seat is certified to fit in airplane seats. The airline website discusses more on that - I don't know the reg or the organization cert. to reference it. Sorry. If he will be sitting on your lap, you will need to let the airline know you are bringing a baby with you. They either note it on your boarding pass or they will issue one for him. It's just so they know how many souls are on board. You can check the carseat with your luggage..so you usually get 2 bags plus carseat (but check with the airline to make sure). Delta also allows you to bring a diaper bag as an extra carry-on. I don't know about other airlines. So you get to bring diaper bag, one carry-on plus your purse. And the stroller can be checked at the gate. He is old enough where you don't have to worry about air pressure problems with his ears. But just in case, you can have him drink a bottle during take-off and landing..or you can blow in his face..or have him chew or suck on something. Other than that, I would just bring "special" toys - something he doesn't play with every day, to play with on the plane because he'll probably get bored. Or you can get lucky and he'll sleep the whole way. Good luck!

I have flew with my son 2 times he was about 8 or 9 months old, I was really nervous about it at first because I was going by myself also to visit family, I thought it was going to be horrible but I kept him awake on the way there and then he fell asleep just as the plane was taking off, I would just say make sure he has a lot to drink on the plane its better for their ears, and bring some quiet toys for him to play with, with his age Im sure hes gonna want to move around, but what you can do is wait for everyone to get on a plane and then ask an attendant if there are ne empty seats and they will probably let you sit there instead so your son has room to move around without bothering anybody. Most of the people on the plane were really good with him they were playing peek a boo with him and stuff too, to keep him entertained. You should be alright. Good luck!!

I just flew with my 19 month old daughter (by myself and for the first time) about a month ago and here's what I learned. If you have a portable DVD player and your son is interested in that sort of thing, bring it. Also bring lots of snacks, a cup/bottle (empty until you go thru security), and some new toys your son has never seen before.
I took my carseat and my stroller but my daughter was able to walk so I bought a "monkey backpack" that is desgined so the parent can hold on to the tail to avoid her getting lost. I put the carseat in the stroller and I switched out her diaper bag for a backpack which was a HUGE help.
As far as security (which was actually the worst part), make sure you have all of your liquids, aresols, and gels in 2oz containers or less in a plastic Ziplock bag (qt size). You have to put that thru security separately so I let my daugher hold on to the bag and put it on the conveyer and she thought that was great. You also will have to take both your and your son's shoes off to put them thru x-ray and your stroller has to be folded and put thru X-ray as well. I would request help from the TSA's with that part of it, especially if you have to carry your son.

We flew to Peru so was like almost 11 hours!!! crazy!!! Take the dvd so he can watch Elmo and my son was 21 months aprox. and also we wrapped the toys and get just toys for the flights so dont show and he will be more excited to see something new. We got the sit & stroll too and it work fine. The way back came by my self so it was really bad bc extra hand is very welcome. Take snaks, and ask the counter of your airline if some seats are empty to check if you can switch your seats. My doctor also told me to use benadryl if he was really hard, ask yours too. Probably bc my trip was really long. We just used all our tips to keep him busy and was the last option the benadryl. Do not change him very often his diapper in the bathroon bc is not to comfy at least if he poo.

Good luck.

Hi! Does anyone know what the security rules are on taking formula/breast milk onto the airplane?
We will be traveling with our 5 months old girl oversees this summer and I want to have extra food with us just in case. (Not sure how nursing will be available on the plane. Or more likely how comfortable I'll be doing it there....)
Also, we are thinking about going first/business class. Although it'll be a lot more expensive, but I'm hoping it will be a better situation with the baby. Any thoughts/experiences with that?
Thanks!
