So Aubrianna is nearly 11 months and she's breastfed. But I work 40 hours a week and she goes to a babysitter. I pump milk for her and she has three 4oz bottles a day at her babysitters. I know her babysitter uses the bottles to help her go down for her naps. She does also eat breakfast, lunch and dinner of babyfoods. I notice that formula fed babies generally drop the bottle-gig around a year. I am planning to continue breastfeeding, but would love to drop the bottle and/or being a slave to the pump! What do breastfeeding/working mums usually do? Aubri is proficient at the sippy cup, but usually i just give her water in it with her meals. Do we just pour the breastmilk into sippy cups? Do I give her cow's milk in a sippy cup? What have other mums done? thanks, angie |

Angie,
I am so glad you asked this question! I am in almost the exact same situation: 40 hours, 3 bottles, 11 months :) Nobody talks about this step and I don't know what to do either. I also want to continue breastfeeding at nights and in the morning, but am more then ready to be done with pumping.... What I am thinking is to gradually move from BF bottles to cow's milk sippy cups after one year, but I don't have any experience with it. Perhaps we can do it together so-to-speak :)
Any experience out there?

Celeste, It's great to hear from you. I wasn't sure if it was a silly question or not! I've thought about the cows milk, but it costs money and you have to worry about the hormones, etc in cows milk and I know breast milk is so much better. And as sick as I am of the pump (i'm pumping right now, and eating lunch), it's not a huge deal if it make a big difference for her. But if it doesn't really matter to her health wise or otherwise, then we're all about introducing cow's milk (after she turns 1 y, I s'pose) And as far as putting the breast milk in the cup ... that just seems strange to me ... but I guess bottles can cause dental problems? Or maybe the babies just need the grown-up "look" of drinking with a sippy cup instead of a bottle? I think my daughter uses the bottle as security during the day, cuz the sitter says she always wants it by her side, even if she's not drinking it. This may be a problem and a reason to phase out the bottle sooner than later. or maybe not. Keep me updated with what's working for you! -angie |

First off, good for you for being a full time working Mama and breastfeeding - that's wonderful! I work 3 days a week and understand how hard it is to work, breastfeed, and pump all the time, so I can only imagine how draining it is to do what you do....congrats on being such a caring Mom. :) Regarding the bottles, when my son self-weaned at 13 1/2 months old, we stopped with the bottles as well. He had no problem at all with the transition, and was happy drinking cow's milk in his sippy with breakfast and lunch, with water in his sippy with dinner. I think it would be great to nurse when you can, put breastmilk in the sippy when you want to, and gradually introduce cow's milk after her 1st b-day. We started more of routine with naps/bedtime after removing the bottle which included our son choosing his own PJ's and story to read. Good luck! |
