My 5 year old is getting ear infections
I have a 5 year old who has been getting ear infections lately. He only had 1 as a baby but has had 4 since August of last year. By the time he tells me his ear hurts we immediately take him to the doctor and we are told it is a bad one. At times a double ear infection. I can tell he is in alot of pain. Does anybody have advice? I know that ear infections come at any age but why all of the sudden? The reason I am asking is because he just woke me up in the middle of the night saying his ear hurts really bad and this makes #5 in 8 months. We will be heading the the Peditrician first thing in the morning. HELP!

Does he swim alot? Does he have colds alot? My son has had 3 ear infections in the last year and they usually follow the drainage from his colds. As soon as he gets a cold I try to keep his ears dry and clean and make sure he's blowing his nose.
I feel for you and I hope you find relief soon!!

Marcie, Thank you. We woke up this morning and he said it feels much better. We decided to wait on the doctor. He told me it just feels like a bubble is in there. And as a matter of fact he is fighting a cold right now. So we're hoping maybe it will run it's course with the cold. In general he really doesn't get sick much at all. However, I put him in pre-school for 2 hours a day from August - December and this is when it all began. He of course seemed sick alot while being around other children. But, never was sick at the exact time of ear infection. So, thank you and I will pay closer attention to the timings of the colds and infections. Yipee and Kindergarden is only 4 months away so more sickness and infections to look forward to!

Jessica, anytime a child starts having multiple ear infections (besides the fact that he just started school), it is very important to check their diet. Milk is one of the most highly allergenic foods to kids and is the culprit in many cases of ear infections, asthma, and skin conditions. If I were you, I would google 'the most allergenic foods for children', then check to see if your son eats any of the foods regularly. If he does, remove the foods for two weeks, then slowly introduce them back into his diet for 3 days in a row. If no reaction, full steam ahead. If he has any sort of a reaction, you might consider leaving that food off the menu. Good luck.

I actually should have said dairy and not just singled out milk.
