hi i just joined and i have 2 boys 3 and 1. i have been considering homeschooling but i'm not sure yet. i taught in public school for almost 10 years before staying home with my kids. i joined this group to hear from others like me. when do most people START homeschooling? i do teach my kids thru art, books, and play, but i have not started any sort of "formal schooling" so i was curious what all you other moms think or do about that. |

It sounds like you are doing wonderfully the way you are right now. Playing as I am sure you are well aware of is a great way to learn and learning through art is great too!! You are off to a great start. My suggestion would be just to trust your instincts. You will know when your children are ready for more formal things. Some homeschooling parents don't ever do any formal teaching but more child lead learning (Unschooling) but you do what you feel is right for your family and you will do great!! I am sure other's will have even better advice than I gave. Welcome to the group and glad you started posting!! :D |

Hi, Stacia! I think when you start "formally" teaching your children depends on each child. This is my first year homeschooling but I wish I had done so from the start with my oldest (he's 6). Instead he went to preK then on to Kindergarten. He had traumatic experiences in both places. However, he's always hungered to learn. I think if I had homeschooled him, he would have been reading by 4. Hindsight is 20/20. My youngest is 4. He went to preK for one year while I taught at the same school. He didn't learn there and doesn't have a desire to learn at home either. He's just NOT ready. If you want to start them out slow on "formal" schooling, you might want to try Before Five in a Row. I've heard excellent things about it. I'm considering Five in a Row for my 4 y.o. for next year (he'll be 5 this summer). |

Thank you for that information, Gidget and Jody. I will definitely check out that Before Five in a Row series. I'm very excited to teach Tony (he's 3) but I just want to instill that love of learning in him right now. I'll ease him into it. I'll check online for that program? |

Yes, I agree easy him into it and since he is so young you can follow his interests and teach him through things he loves to do. Again trust your instincts and remember to relax. They do learn more then you think they do. |

Thanks so much for all your input everyone! I googled Before 5 in a Row and found I can buy it on Amazon. They were all out of it at the Christian Book website. It looks like a great resource to get me started. I will relax and trust my instincts. I have to remember that. Have a great day everyone. I'll post more questions later. |
