cutting teeth/ear infections
It seems as though whenever my daughter cuts a tooth (or in her case 2 at a time) she gets an ear infection. Is this normal or common? Her first molar just came through, and she is miserable. I realize it could be the discomfort from her teeth but her ear is red and she is rubbing it like crazy. I plan to call the dr monday if she is still in a lot of pain and not sleeping at night.

My daughter doesn't get an ear infection she seems to almost get the flu! She has diarrhea and vomits whenever she tries to eat. The doctor said that while not the norm it is not unusual either that all the extra saliva can do wierd things to the body.

I have a similar question. In the past couple of weeks my 13 month old daughter has gotten 3 new teeth, 2 of which are lower molars. She hasn't had any ear infections, but she has been pretty miserable and VERY clingy to me the past few days. For the past few days she has been running a low grade fever (100.2 at the highest) and has had diarreah. I know the fever is normal with teething but wasn't sure about the diarreah. Also, even though it is only a low grade fever, how long should I allow it to persist before calling the doctor? With such a low temp, they don't usually do anything, but anything over a week or more makes me worry.

Usually when my children have been cutting teeth...they have run low grade fevers...and depending on which teeth or how many teeth they were cutting they would get pretty loose stools....also their little noses would run...my 10 month old Kate is doing this right now...everytime she cuts a tooth her nose starts running...and when they get a runny nose...they can get a secondary infection in the ears. So as maintenance with all my children, who were prone to ear infections, I would do olive oil...that I warmed up just to body temperature...put a few drops in each ear, massaged it in the ears. The ear will naturally heal itself..and olive oil helps it to heal faster and will actually heal an ear infection. My kids haven't had to be on an antibiotic for ear infections for 3 years now, since I have done that. Hope this helps.

As far as the diarrhea goes...if they are not eating and drinking, especially drinking enough, than it might be a concern...how many wet diapers are they having, etc...does it seem normal, if it is less...you may need to have them checked...but they will probably be fine, if they are drinking enough...are they bottle fed or breast fed?

Hayley, thank you so much for your suggestion about the olive oil. I have never heard of that. We just got home from the ER, it was so bad when i finally got her to sleep she was still crying in her sleep :( and sure enough she has an ear infection in both ears :(

Oh Amanda! I'm so sorry to hear that...try to ease her pain by putting the warm olive oil in her ears...make sure it's not hot...just body temp...my little girl just loves it when I put the warm drops in...and massage them in...keep me updated on how she is doing. When I haven't warmed them up...it was a shock to her and she cried. Just so you know.

My son does not get ear infections but he cuts teeth 3 or 4 at a time. I use teething tablets. They work wonders. He pulls at his ears and runs fevers.

My son is getting full set, lol. Starting with fever (last time went up to 105 and was holding there for a day no matter what we did) , runny nose (first clear, than at times yellowish and greenish and back clear), coughing (last time it ounded so gross that dr at ER ordered XR of hi lungs to discover nothing), vomitting for few days as well as refusing to eat anything of consistnece more than mash; well, loose stool is very nice way to describe what happens. add to this all crunkinest and being overall unhappy. You get the picure. At first i got scaryy. Now I know what's going on and that's going to last for about 6-8 weeks and end with 4 new teeth at some point..

It is so nice to hear others' input. My daughter does seem to be wetting a little less than usual, but overall I would say her diapers are still normal. She usually only has bm's once every day or 2. With the teething it has been loose stools 3 or 4 times a day, which compared to so many of the other stories I am reading, is not bad at all. She is bf and is still nursing regularly. She hasn't been eating as much solid foods, but compensates by nursing more. Now I am jsut tryinhg to get her to drink more water, juice, or milk aside from nursing to alleviate the constant nursing as well as to keep her more hydrated. I've tried bottles, 3 different sippy cups, and even letting her drink with help from a regular cup. She usually takes a few drinks then loses interest.

This conversation has made me feel much better; thank you!
